Celebrities who say they're eating more veggies, fewer processed foods, or more moderate meal portions may be onto something—"that's a great idea for everyone," Dr. Seltzer says—but their diets, on the whole, might not be ideal for you. Should you look to their food logs for, say, breakfast inspo? Sure, Dr. Seltzer says. Just don't let their habits take the place of common sense—or sound medical advice. Generally, Rihanna does what she wants when it comes to food. Sometimes she eats at traditional Italian restaurants, sometimes she has her chef cook for her, and sometimes she just drinks beer. But when she does want to diet, she goes on the 5-Factor Diet by Harley Pasternak. The basis is pretty simple: Eat five meals a day, and make sure each of those meals include five “essential” ingredients.
Having a salad for lunch or dinner fills you up with belly-flattening fiber and nutrients, and adding one more ingredient will really stoke your metabolism: salmon. You already learned the metabolism-boosting effects of protein, but with salmon in particular you'll also get a dose of omega-3 fatty acids. In a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, supplementing diets with fish oil for six weeks increased lean muscle and decreased fat. Other studies have shown similar effects. Scientists speculate this reaction may be due to fish oil's ability to reduce levels of fat-storage enzymes in the body.
Robert Young, Ph.D., created the controversial alkaline diet. Health explains the diet claims certain diseases are caused by high acidity in the blood — so you should aim to consume foods that will balance your pH levels. Unfortunately, Young was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. And while the idea of balancing your acid levels through diet has been debunked by many nutritionists, his plan does promote the consumption of healthful foods. How To Boost Your Metabolism And Burn More Fat | 3 Simple Tips
The truth: The diet is based on the misleading idea that you can change your blood pH with food. While the pH of the stomach is acidic, the blood is slightly alkaline, something the food you eat can't change. Still, one positive part of the diet is that it advocates eating more fruits and veggies, something most dietitians agree we should all be doing.
Until this point, you've treated annual physicals as optional, but now you need to get serious. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels all need routine checks, especially if you know there is a family history of troubles. The ache you feel today could be nothing -- then again, it may have been caused by too much or too little exercise, a diet deficiency, or something more serious. The sooner you catch it, the less damage done. If your knees ache, your back hurts, or you suffer from persistent headaches, see your doctor. Wouldn't you be hesitant to pilot a plane that didn't receive regular maintenance and service?

Justin Timberlake trains in the morning, and thus, he eats two daily breakfasts, according to Bon Appétit. “I’ll have waffles with flax seed and almond butter and one egg scrambled. Then I’ll work out and have a second breakfast–another egg or a protein shake. Within a half-hour to 40 minutes after a workout, that’s when you want to load up on protein. I mostly work out so I can eat religiously.”

Modern Family’s Julie Bowen is one of the hottest, most hilarious and greatest TV mums of all time. Don’t argue, we’re right. We have a major woman crush on Claire Dunphy, and of course, Julie herself. She has been nominated for a massive six Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and won the award twice. Julie has also appeared in Boston Legal, Ed and Lost. The 48-year-old is also a mother of three, on and off the camera.
"As much as I love words on the page, I'm not fully satisfied until I get to speak them in person with others," Leslie adds. She's honored to travel and share from her passions nationally and internationally at conferences, universities, churches, and retreats. With three master's degrees, she has taught collegiate classes for many years, including six years in Seattle Pacific University's MFA program. If she can't see her audience, radio is a good second. Getting a good night’s sleep is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and also a surprisingly effective means of slimming down. The results of the Nurses’ Health Study reveal that, among a group of 60,000 women studied for 16 years, those who got 5 hours of sleep or less at night increased their risk of becoming obese by 15 percent. Getting adequate rest can also reduce your risk of dementia, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Luckily, you’ll be heading off to the Land of Nod in no time once you learn the 20 Ways to Double Your Sleep Quality!
Jillian Michaels, of former Biggest Loser glory, is not a fan of elimination diets and encourages people to follow an 80/20 nutrition lifestyle – 80 percent of the time focused on healthy eating and 20 percent of the time taking a more relaxed, moderate approach. Brynn McDowell, a registered dietitian and owner of The Domestic Dietitian, points out that Michaels gives tips on her blog for people who are looking to develop a healthy relationship with food and encourages people to take the time to educate themselves about what's in the foods they eat. McDowell appreciates that Michaels encourages people to read the nutrition facts panel on packages and to stick to foods with short ingredients lists. Michaels advocates for packing your lunch to alleviate the difficulty of choosing foods from restaurant menus while saving money at the same time.
We'd be remiss not to include Madame Goop, who pretty much writes the book (or rather, blog) on whacky detox methods. After a period of indulgence (which could just mean that she had a solitary cigarette and glass of wine), Gwyneth likes to rely on an elimination diet to get her body back to square one. This entails cutting out a laundry list of foods that can potentially aggravate bodily allergies and disturb digestion, ranging from gluten to dairy to orange juice.

It makes sense: Wouldn't you prefer to order a bowl instead of a burrito at your beloved fast-casual joint, rather than ditch your old standby? What's more, research suggests super small swaps—like snacking on an apple instead of chips—may be sufficient for fending off gradual weight gain and, when extrapolated to an entire population, significantly reducing heart disease and stroke deaths.
7. You’re not getting enough sleep – lack of sleep has been shown to increase your risk of obesity. It’s a vicious cycle – you wake up exhausted after a rubbish night’s sleep, you reach for the wrong foods (to give you a quick energy boost), you end up even more tired and unable to sleep. AND insufficient sleep has been shown to increase your hunger hormone ghrelin!
This is another "healthy" swap gone wrong. Sure, egg whites have less fat and fewer calories than whole eggs — but they also have fewer nutrients. Vitamin B-12 is one of those nutrients you’ll only find in the yolk; it’s essential for your brain health and keeps your blood flowing normally. Your body absorbs B-12 more poorly as you age, meaning that cutting one of your main sources of the nutrient is a bad idea. Egg yolks also have impressive stores of vitamin D, A, E, and K, along with lots of omega-3s. You’d be surprised how many people subsist off of egg whites but still take extra omega-3 pills.

I am not an expert but have been where you are. My doctor told me that due to stress my cortisol hormone was quite high and this can make it difficult to lose weight. I was told to do more soothing exercise (long walks), yoga, and strength exercises. I also was told to eliminate sugar, flour, no red meat etc. it is working. I also have to watch my calories and it is working. You can conquer this Barbara, I wish you all the best.
Your go-to fast food joints achieve perfectly crispy fries by frying the spuds in oil that has been reused over and over again. A study in the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research found that heating oil to the smoking point during stir-frying may decrease the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids because of oxidative degradation. Those are the heart-healthy fats that nourish your skin and joints. Instead of grabbing a bag of fries at the drive-thru, opt for baking your own at home with a brush of olive oil and fresh herbs.
At the advice of her dermatologist, Dr. Harold Lancer, Beckham has incorporated omega-3-rich fish into her daily diet. “I used to have really problematic skin and he said to me, ‘You have to eat salmon every single day,’” she told The Edit. “I said, ‘Really, every day?’ And he said, ‘Yes. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, you have to eat it every single day.’” How To Lose Belly Fat After 40
It’s no surprise that Victoria Secret models follow some strict diets, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is no exception. She follows a plan by Dr. Nigma Talib, who practices naturopathy, which is a system of treatment that focuses on diets, herbs, vitamins, and natural agents to heal, rather than surgery and prescription drugs. Dr. Talib doesn’t let you have sugar, dairy, gluten, or alcohol.
“I eat a salad every day. My need for cheese has to be controlled – that’s the thing I find hardest to resist! I also love peanut butter. If I have that on wholewheat toast in the morning, I don’t snack… I like to keep moving. I warm up every morning and do exercises and run up and down the stairs.” Choreographer and former Strictly judge Arlene, 74, slows down for no one!
This diet, created by trainer-to-the-stars Tracy Anderson, has reportedly been tried by the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Lady Gaga. The gist of the 7-day eating plan? Eat jarred baby food for breakfast and lunch, followed by a low-calorie dinner. Anderson cites this as a way to “eliminate toxins”—a red flag because the body naturally expels toxins. This is nothing more than a short-term crash diet that is very low in calories and nutrients.

This is the single most beneficial article I have ever encountered in my searches for the past few years to be honest – following this to a T and have lost 13lbs in 3 weeks – feel great. This is better than anything I have tried in the past. I will say I am doing the ketogenic fasting daily, on the 8/16 schedule. After the first week, I don’t even feel hungry anymore during the fast – I set myself for no eats from 8pm – Noon, but now go until 1-2pm before I start up again, still shut down at 8pm regardless. I have been kayaking, working out, and no loss in strength/stamina – much the opposite. Feel great, solid mental state – good stuff here. Been sharing it with friends.
“Modern life puts such pressure on us to do, produce, and succeed that we often find ourselves racing from one activity to another,” Bernstein points out. “In the process, we can easily lose a sense of ourselves. Downtime brings us back to the integrity of being ourselves. In the not doing, we are open and relaxed and thus insights and creative ideas find their way to us.”
Iron deficiencies can slow down your metabolism. Do you know what’s got plenty of it? Lean meat. Eating three to four daily servings of iron-rich foods will help keep your inner furnace burning. Fortified cereals, dried fruit, and dark leafy greens will get you on your way to meeting your iron goals, but lean meat—with its high muscle-building protein content—will be doubly useful in revving up your metabolism.
When you were young, you probably didn't spend too much time thinking about preparing your body for the future. In your teens and twenties, you're in peak condition and it's the perfect time to start exercising. Cut to 20 years later and, if you didn't start exercising, you probably wish you had since there's something we all start to experience in our 40's—weight gain.

Experts say weight training is the best way to crank up your resting metabolic rate. "As you get older, your resting metabolic rate drops, but weight training can rev it right back up again: A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories a pound of fat does," explains fitness expert Westcott. In fact, a woman who weighs 130 pounds and is muscular burns more calories than a sedentary 120-pound woman of the same height. Regular strength training can increase your resting metabolic rate anywhere from 6.8 to 7.8 percent. (That means that if you weigh 120 pounds, you could burn around 100 more calories a day, even when you're just watching TV.)
Cardio will help burn the most calories, and this can be anything from walking around the neighborhood to riding your bike to jogging on the treadmill. Whatever you choose for your cardio, keep it challenging by increasing duration, distance or intensity so that you continue to burn as many calories as you can. Writing down a plan can help keep you motivated and goal-oriented, and it can also help you track your progress.
Think about it: Say you're twice as active as an influencer you follow. Eat exactly what she eats, and you'll feel way more tired and way more hungry than she is, since your body likely requires more fuel to operate, Dr. Seltzer says. A more appropriate diet that's based on your specific energy needs may involve way more food—like two ice-cream scoops instead of one!—and give you way more energy so you can live your best life, hanger-free.
If you want to weigh less, you’ve got to eat less, right? Well, if you take in too few calories, it can cause your body to lose muscle mass, which will decrease the rate of your metabolism. Plus, when you skimp on calories, your body slows the rate at which is burns calories to conserve the fuel it’s got. “Under-fueling is just as risky as over-fueling,” explains Carolyn Brown, MS RD at Foodtrainers in Manhattan. Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CDN agrees: “In an attempt for quick, noticeable weight loss, many people wrongfully believe that eating as few calories as possible is the best solution. Not only can this lead to numerous nutritional deficiencies as the body is getting less food overall, it can actually have the opposite effect on weight loss.” Instead of cutting calories like crazy, use the simple diet and exercise hacks below that can help you slim down quickly and safely without screwing up your metabolism.
Whole foods contain an assortment of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that act as metabolic spark plugs, giving you the energy to get up and move around. That’s the theory behind increasingly popular diets like Paleo, which eschews processed foods in favor of lean meat and vegetables. Without preservatives and unnecessary crap in your food, your body will burn clean, and that translates to a faster-moving metabolic engine.
I'm on the cusp of my fiftieth birthday. My forties have been hard, as reality and gravity collided with me in the middle. But they've also been THE most clarifying and freeing decade of my life. As I look to my future, I fully expect the years to come to be full of wonder. But these last ten years have been lonely too. I've found the voices of women to be somewhat hushed in my middle-ages. It's tempting to sit down quietly in a culture that feeds on youth, as if we have nothing valuable to say.
The key phrase here is “too much.” While we rave over coffee for all of its antioxidant benefits, chugging six cups a day is a recipe for the jitters and compromised sleep quality. “As we age, our circadian rhythms change, as do our hormones, which can make us more sensitive to caffeine and affect our ability to sleep soundly,” Isabel Smith, RD tells us.
“Most 40-year-olds can remember the fat-free craze of the ’90s, when Snackwells was king,” says Shapiro. “Well, those days are over.” She advises that you leave the fat-free fake foods behind and enjoy healthy fats that add flavor to your meals and help you fill up with less. “Coconut oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, salmon are rich in vitamins and minerals that will keep you young and fill you up on smaller portions, and therefore fewer calories.” She says.
Weight loss doesn’t get easier than this: Simply drinking more water may increase the rate at which healthy people burn calories, according to a study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water (about 2 tall glasses), participants’ metabolic rates increased by 30 percent. The researchers estimate that increasing water intake by 1.5 liters a day (about 6 cups) would burn an extra 17,400 calories over the course of the year—a weight loss of approximately five pounds!
Whether due to the night-waking of young children or hot flashes from the onset of perimenopause, middle-age is when sleep quality goes downhill for many women. Lack of sleep has long been linked to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes, because it’s harder for the body to regulate glucose leading to something called insulin resistance, which can cause weight gain. Work and family commitments can often put a squeeze on mealtime. That gets in the way of losing weight, because we’re not giving our stomachs time to register that we’re full. Divide your plate in two. Eat half, and do something else for 30 minutes. It’ll still be there when you get back, but your hunger may have left the building. Also, fill up cheaply and easily with any of these 20 Best-Ever Fat Burning Soups.
"How can I eat this much satisfying food and still lose weight?" Brenda asked during our second meeting. For fat-phobic patients (especially those who lived through the low-fat brainwashing in the '80s), ketogenic diets—which are about 80 to 90 percent fat—can initially seem unbelievably decadent. Yes, that’s a lot of fat, but you’ll focus on filling, healthy sources like avocado, wild-caught fish, nuts, and seeds. Yay for foods that we love!
As a 62 year old I have always struggled with my weight but have joined slimming world. They encourage you to eat healthily by essentially using a low fat & carb method. While meat packs a lot of protein in one shot, getting your protein only from animal sources could actually speed muscle loss, according to a 2012 review by the International Osteoporosis Foundation Nutrition Working Group. Why? Meats, as well as grains like wheat and corn, are acid-producing foods that stunt muscle-protein synthesis. The good news: Fruits and vegetables are alkalizing and can help offset some of the muscle-robbing effects of meaty, starchy meals. "Plus, there are a lot of delicious vegetarian sources of protein," says Dr. Gerbstadt. "Try experimenting with tofu, lentils, or beans. They taste great and tend to be lower in calories." When you opt for animal protein, avoid high-fat sources such as regular ground beef, bacon, whole milk, or full-fat cheese. 9 Simple Tips for Losing Weight After 50
Note: A English relative and Dr said to have my Testosterone checked. It never occurred to me to do that. He said getting that boosted would be like taking steroids and renew my motivation and energy to 25-30 yr old levels. So that's first, and cut out the beer ;)…. Oh, Doc said Coconut oil has been found to be bad, loaded with bad fats, the kind that raise the bad cholesterol, LDL. So that's out. Any other direction or guidance would be appreciated. Like healthy cooking/eating, getting some pork and fish in there, etc.
WHAT IT IS: Developed by former scientist Dr. Barry Sears, The Zone Diet involves getting 40 percent of your daily total caloric intake from carbohydrates, 30 percent from carbs and 30 percent from fats. According to Sears, balancing the correct amount of amino acids with carbs helps control the appetite to prevent over-eating (which leads to weight gain). Followers eat three portion-controlled meals and two snacks a day, preventing you from getting too hungry – or cranky. Hollywood hottie Jennifer Aniston was such a big fan, some have even called it the “Jennifer Aniston Diet." Weight Loss Cardio Workout at Home | 35 Minutes
Jenny Craig doesn’t require any calorie counting or meal prep on the user’s part. Verywell Fit explains you’ll get a number of prepackaged entrees to eat per day when you’re on the diet, and you’re also encouraged to “volumize” them by adding more fresh produce. Those on the program will also weigh themselves once per week and can expect to lose around one to two pounds between weigh-ins. 3 BEST Diets to LOSE WEIGHT & BELLY FAT
Recent research suggests that women on average will lose muscle mass twice as fast as men the same age, and that can make a huge difference in their ability to lose or at least maintain weight, Peeke says. Muscle is far more "metabolically active" than fat, meaning that lean, more muscular people have an easier time burning calories at rest than to people with higher proportions of body fat.
Load up on low-fat dairy: Women who consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese three to four times a day lost 70 percent more body fat than women who didn't eat dairy in a study published in the January 2003 American Society for Nutritional Sciences Journal of Nutrition. The reason: Calcium, along with other substances in dairy, actually revs up your metabolism, telling your body to burn excess fat faster, according to study author Michael Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. And no, fortified o.j. won't do the trick. The best results come from dairy products instead of from other calcium-rich foods (like broccoli), calcium-fortified products (such as orange juice) or supplements. Women reap the largest fat-burning benefit when they consume three servings of dairy and 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day, Zemel's research shows.

It takes the body extra effort to break down whole grains than more refined and processed grains, like the flour ordinarily used to make bread and pasta. You can help keep your metabolic rate elevated by consuming foods that the body has to work harder to digest. Your go-tos are whole foods that are also rich in fiber. We’re talking brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, and sprouted grain bread.
Get your beauty rest! Sleep deprivation revs up your appetite-stimulating hormones and leads to a sluggish metabolism. It also zaps your energy, which means you're less likely to move, says Anne Kulze, M.D. "Sleep deprivation tends to promote insulin resistance," she says. "Even three weeks of sleep deprivation can change insulin activity, which translates to a slow metabolism."
Before you throw a French press at someone's head, read on. You don't have to eliminate coffee — but throw a few cups of green tea into the rotation and you may find that your pants fit a little looser. "Research shows that the caffeine and catechin in green tea has the ability to increase your metabolic function by 4-5 percent and improve fat oxidation by 10-16 percent," explains Bonfiglio Cunningham. Green tea comes with an extra perk, too — its antioxidant properties. "The antioxidants found in many teas fight free radicals in the body, improving the aging process and lowering the risk of disease." How to get flat abs after 50
17. You’re drinking too much – alcohol, lattes and energy drinks. Too much alcohol can irritate your gut lining, but also encourage you to eat more (those late night carb munchies after too much wine?!). You might think your skinny latte isn’t doing much harm…but there’s a load of sugar in there from the milk, and the caffeine stimulates more insulin production. What about an energy drink? Forget it, all that sugar and caffeine is an insulin disaster!
Here's welcome news: You may have inherited your mom's slow-mo metabolism, but you’re not stuck with it. New research shows you can trick your body into burning calories more efficiently, especially if you hit the gym. By strength-training just a couple of times a week, for example, you’ll reverse 50% of the seemingly inevitable metabolism slow-down that comes with age, says Gary Hunter, PhD, a professor of human studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. So take control of your metabolism by making these boosters part of your routine—and (finally) stop sweating every cookie.
Ideally, we sleep about eight hours for every 24. Most people spend another seven to ten hours sitting at their desk. That means most of us spend the overwhelming majority of our time sedentary. Our bodies weren’t designed for this level of inactivity—most of humans’ evolutionary history involved being active, searching for food and fuel. Nutritionist Lisa Jubilee says that one way to burn more calories daily is to stand more and sit less. She cites a British study which found that standing at work burned 50 more calories per hour than sitting. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, consider this: If you stand for just three hours of your day, in one year you’d expend more than 30,000 extra calories—which amounts to about 8 lbs of fat!
Workouts for Women Over 40 - Core Strength Exercises
If you really want to go for weight loss, you're going to have to work at it and you're going to have to work harder than you did before, doing up to 350 minutes of exercise each week. We have to exercise more frequently and more vigorously to compensate for the typical weight gain associated with aging. There are some important points to consider if you go this route:
Julia Roberts has been named the world’s most beautiful woman of 2017 by People magazine. The 49-year-old Pretty Woman voted top for a record fifth time. One of America’s sweethearts first graced the cover of People magazine as the most beautiful woman in the world for 1991. At that time, she was just 23 years old. Roberts won the title again in 2000, 2005 and 2010. And now at 49, the actress and mother of three is once again the cover for People Magazine’s “World’s Most Beautiful Woman” in 2017.
You've heard this one before, but it's worth repeating! Eating smaller meals more often throughout the day can help fire up your fat-burning furnace. Susie Akers, director at the Aamoth Family Pediatric Wellness Center at MetroHealth and gastroenterology dietitian, recommends you consume at least three to four times a day instead of only one to two times to keep your metabolism up and avoid excessive portions with large meals. Dr. Oz's Fix for Back Fat in Women
Because your resting metabolic rate—i.e., how many calories you burn at rest—is based on many variables such as your height and weight, genes, sex, activity level, current diet, and muscle mass, there's little chance your system needs exactly the same amount of calories or micronutrients like protein, carbs, and fat, as a celeb you aspire to eat like, according to Dr. Seltzer. "Weight-loss diets aren't one-size-fits-all," he says. "Following someone else’s is like looking through their glasses. The likelihood of seeing clearly with their prescription is really low."

It may sound like another trendy low-carb diet, but a number of celebrities swear by the quick weight-loss effects from the keto diet. Everyday Health explains in essence, the plan is simple: 75% of your food should be fats, and only 20% should be from protein, and the remaining 5% should be from carbs. After a few days, the body enters a state of ketosis, which is when it burns fat for fuel instead of carbs. How to Lose Weight for Men over Forty - It's 80% this...

We know, we know: It’s flu season. But we’re sorry to say that, after our research team here at Eat This, Not That! dug into the science, we have some bad news for you: Your hand sanitizer could be making you fat. Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial agent frequently added to soap. It’s referred to by researchers as an “obesogen”—a compound that can potentially cause weight gain by disrupting the body’s endocrine (hormone) system. Studies suggest that triclosan can negatively affect the thyroid. As thyroid hormones control metabolism, any hit to the organ’s functionally could cause you to gain weight. The evidence is of particular concern for hospital workers, researchers say, as they’re exposed to the antibacterial agent on a regular basis and often show significantly higher levels of triclosan in their urine. A study in the journal PLOS One found a detectable level was associated with a 0.9-point increase in body mass index (BMI). If you’re a frequent hand-washer, experts recommend sticking to good ol’ soap—not the antibacterial kind—and to buy organic cleansers when possible.

Taking shots of cheap whiskey, sleeping on futons, staying up until 4 in the morning—there are a lot of habits you’re probably happy to leave to your 20-year-old self. But the beautiful mystery of eating a whole pepperoni pizza and actually losing five pounds? Those are glory days worth mourning. Once you’re over 40, suddenly ditching a few pesky lbs and losing your gut seems to take monumental effort.
