I am now 75 and have a BMI of 26 which is technically overweight for my height but not by much. I have found that I have had to make changes to my diet so that they become a habit. For example I only have fruit and yogurt after a meal and never a pudding. When at events where cake is handed around I can happily say no as I find it too sweet now. People sometime say oh you are being so good, but I’m not I just don’t enjoy it anymore and I won’t eat it just to please others. I have also discovered that it is good to eat plenty of protein usually in the form of poultry and a high protein low fat cheese I have discovered.
The freezer aisle is stocked with appetizing frozen dinners that make busy weeknight suppers a breeze, but these convenient and inexpensive foods may cost you your health in the long run. Many of these meals are jam-packed with sodium and preservatives and are void of sufficient fiber, which will help keep you full and less prone to midnight munchies.
Robert Young, Ph.D., created the controversial alkaline diet. Health explains the diet claims certain diseases are caused by high acidity in the blood — so you should aim to consume foods that will balance your pH levels. Unfortunately, Young was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. And while the idea of balancing your acid levels through diet has been debunked by many nutritionists, his plan does promote the consumption of healthful foods. Down a large Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Milkshake from Baskin-Robbins and you’ll devour 42 Chips Ahoy cookies worth of sugar and almost a half-pound worth of calories. Instead, you can make a protein shake at home with wholesome add-ins such as dates, cacao nibs, and a rich protein powder that can help you feel satiated without adding weight onto your waistline.

If you’re on the fence about whether to buy organic, this news may sway you: Fruits, vegetables, and grains grown without pesticides keep your fat-burning system running at full-tilt because they don’t expose your thyroid to toxins, Hyman says. Nonorganic produce, on the other hand, “blocks your metabolism mainly by interfering with your thyroid, which is your body’s thermostat and determines how fast it runs,” he explains. Quick 5 Minute Home Workout For Men Over 40
Putting yourself on a very low-calorie diet is a surefire way not to lose. "Your body is programmed to defend your usual weight," says Liz Applegate, Ph.D., professor of nutrition at the University of California at Davis and author of Bounce Your Body Beautiful. "So if you suddenly drop 1,000 calories from your diet, your resting metabolic rate [the number of calories your body burns to maintain basic bodily functions, such as breathing and heartbeat] will automatically slow down, because your body now assumes that you're starving." What's Causing Your Belly Fat After 50 and How To Lose It

I am gluten-free except I do drink some beers from time to time and eat some pub food about once a week. I do an intense free weight workout about 10 minutes four times a week. I am a UPS driver and move constantly for about 9 to 10 hours a day.

Crash diets -- those involving eating fewer than 1,200 (if you're a woman) or 1,800 (if you're a man) calories a day -- are bad for anyone hoping to quicken their metabolism. Although these diets may help you drop pounds, that comes at the expense of good nutrition. Plus, it backfires, since you can lose muscle, which in turn slows your metabolism. The final result is your body burns fewer calories and gains weight faster than before the diet.

Eating out is a treat and is probably something you’re doing because you deserve it—maybe it’s your birthday, you’re celebrating a family member, or just getting together with old friends. But letting yourself indulge doesn’t mean you have to be completely blind to just how deceptive many restaurant menu options can be. From breakfasts that have more sugar than seven Snickers’ bars to pastas that have more saturated fat than 50 eggs (yes, five-zero), it’s well worth your time to read up before your go out. Start with our list of The #1 Worst Menu Option at 41 Popular Restaurants. You’ll start to get a good feel of what to watch out for!

The Transformers actress and mom of three turned to the keto diet to get her pre-baby body back. Fox told E! News in August 2104 that she cut out bread and carbs, including chips, pretzels, and crackers. She cleaned up her diet so much she says the worst thing she’d take in on any given day was coffee, and admitted to E! News: “I don’t eat anything fun.”
Hormones: One of the main culprits for weight gain is, of course, our hormones, which start to change right around the mid-30s and into the 40s. This change in hormones, less estrogen for women and less testosterone for men, cause the fat in our bodies fat to shift to the middle of the body while abandoning other areas of the body you could care less about. That's one reason you may get a little fluffier around the middle while other parts of you actually get smaller.
The Deal: Their “whole thing” is complicated for several reasons. To start, Tom Brady claims to have never consumed coffee in his life (!!), which is why the no-caffeine part of their regimen is easy for him. Other elements of their diet: Avoid “nightshade” plants, which includes a slew of random but essential ingredients like peppers, eggplants, mushrooms, potatoes and tomatoes. According to their personal chef, their diet consists of roughly 80 percent vegetables, and the rest is lean protein. No white flour or sugar. Oh, and no strawberries, for reasons I still don’t understand. Did I mention no caffeine? NO COFFEE. There. Is. No. Coffee. None. Nope. HOW.
Caffeine's ability to speed up the central nervous system makes it a powerful metabolism booster. "In addition, coffee beans provide antioxidants and real health value," says Amy Goodson, RD, a dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine. "Provided your cup is not laden with cream and syrup, coffee can be a great way to give you energy as well as some antioxidants." Coffee has been shown to improve energy levels during exercise, especially endurance activity, and help people work harder longer, which therefore burns more calories. Drinking coffee after a workout can also be beneficial. Consuming caffeine after exercise increased muscle glycogen by 66 percent in endurance athletes, enabling them to more quickly replenish energy stores used through exercise, according to a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Refined carbs, such as bagels, white bread, and potatoes, create a surge in insulin that in turn promotes storage of fat and may drive down your metabolic rate, says Louis Aronne, M.D., an obesity specialist at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, who recommends high-fiber carbs instead. "It's important to keep carbohydrates in your overall diet, but focus on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, which have less of an impact on insulin levels," he explains.
In addition to being low calorie, baby food is also low in additives and preservatives, and comes in very portion-controlled, infant-sized jars. From a health standpoint, one could do a lot worse. However, be prepared to get some pretty funny looks from your fellow human beings.  As Jim White, a registered dietician with the American Dietetic Association told The Huffington Post, "Who wants to eat baby food 14 times a day? We’ve got to enjoy ourselves too, and chew our food. It’s just not livable, unless you’re in a retirement home."
Chanel and Fendi designer Karl Lagerfeld always looks the picture of chic, but how does he maintain such a svelte figure? Lagerfeld told Harper's Bazaar that he relies on chocolate-flavored protein shakes, steamed apples, and bottles upon bottles of Diet Coke every day to keep him in tip-top form. We can't be certain of the health benefits there, but if it boosts his creative process in the couture arena, we're here for it.
One study found that premenopausal women who ate 30 percent of their calories from protein (half of which was from dairy foods) for 16 weeks lost more fat and gained more muscle than those who ate a lower protein diet. That result continues with age, as other studies have found that people who eat more protein lose less muscle as they get older. That’s key to preventing your metabolism from slowing down. It’s all about maintaining your muscle mass and even building more muscle with resistance exercise and getting enough protein.
We know, we know: It’s flu season. But we’re sorry to say that, after our research team here at Eat This, Not That! dug into the science, we have some bad news for you: Your hand sanitizer could be making you fat. Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial agent frequently added to soap. It’s referred to by researchers as an “obesogen”—a compound that can potentially cause weight gain by disrupting the body’s endocrine (hormone) system. Studies suggest that triclosan can negatively affect the thyroid. As thyroid hormones control metabolism, any hit to the organ’s functionally could cause you to gain weight. The evidence is of particular concern for hospital workers, researchers say, as they’re exposed to the antibacterial agent on a regular basis and often show significantly higher levels of triclosan in their urine. A study in the journal PLOS One found a detectable level was associated with a 0.9-point increase in body mass index (BMI). If you’re a frequent hand-washer, experts recommend sticking to good ol’ soap—not the antibacterial kind—and to buy organic cleansers when possible. The Australian trainer – who is also the man behind the bodies of Elle Macpherson and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – recommends fresh, unprocessed foods and is essentially a low-carbohydrate diet. The diet kicks off with a 14 day kick-start comprising of a protein-heavy meat, eggs and vegetables. After two weeks, fruits and minimal amounts of dairy are incorporated back into the diet.

Are menopausal changes affecting your weight? Many women struggle with weight loss before, during, and sometimes even long after menopause. Weight gain at this time may be related to changes in your hormones. But this is also a time when many women make changes to their daily routines that may affect their weight. For example, after the kids leave home some women are not as busy during the day with non-exercise physical activities like carrying groceries, lifting laundry baskets and other household chores. Evaluate your lifestyle to make sure that a change in your daily habits isn’t affecting your weight.

Not only does muscle weigh more than fat, but it uses more energy, too. The average woman in her 30s who strength-trains 30 to 40 minutes twice a week for four months will increase her resting metabolism by 100 calories a day. That means you're resetting your thermostat to keep running at that rate even on the days when you don't make it to the gym, Hunter explains.

WHAT IT IS: Hollywood seems to be juiced over this six-juices-a-day, 1,200-calorie intense cleanse. While on the Pressed Juicery diet (said to be a major bloat beater), followers receive a daily supply of juices specially delivered every morning. Each fresh, nutrient-packed drink is designed to replace meals and snacks, and all alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine should be avoided.

"So it's extremely important to know that muscle is very metabolically active and that you don't want to lose it. That being said, a typical can man can lose over the course of the age of 30 through the age of 50 anywhere between 5 and 10 pounds of muscle mass. A woman could definitely lose that -- that's a given because she, through repeated dieting and decreased physical activity, will lose that," Peeke says.
Hi Barbara, I can relate to that. I am 63 and had a lot of stress when my mom got cancer and passed away last year. Is there anyway you can avoid the things that are stressing you out? if not, can you at least try getting away from it by going in your room and listening to music once a day. Try to find little things to make you feel better, like feeding the birds or growing a new plant. I know it sounds trivial, but anything to distract from the stress. Exercise helps me more than anything else. Even when mom had Hospice coming over everyday, I would squeeze in that 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. I use a walking workout DVD by Leslie Sansone. Anyone can do these workouts, very easy. It works wonders. Also, try eating more protein and green fresh veggies (I love steamed broccoli). I hope you start feeling better soon. Beat Menopause Belly Fat by Starving Your Fat Cells (Not Yourself)

Good news: Age and weight don’t have to be correlated. Even though many people gain weight as they creep past 40, that doesn’t mean everyone has to. In fact, you don't even have to resurrect all those hardcore diets you tried in your 20s and 30s to keep the pounds from packing on, because even in an age full of hormonal and metabolic changes, all it takes is a few key diet modifications to stay looking and feeling your best.

According to a study in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, eating just two-and-a-half serving of whole grains—like pearled barley—can slash your risk of heart disease by more than 20 percent. So start your day off right with the tastiest early-morning grain: Oatmeal. For best (in other words: tastiest) results, cover it in berries and cinnamon, both of which have heart-boosting benefits.

Stress can interrupt sleep, which is essential to maintaining a healthy weight. Too little sleep makes you lose motivation for exercise and causes your body to pump out more hunger hormones. Stress and lack of sleep also cause your body to produce more cortisol, a stress hormone that also drives weight gain. Yoga, meditation and other methods of self care are ways to help manage stress so you can concentrate on dietary and exercise efforts to lose weight.
The pro football player turned outfielder for the New York Mets told GQ in February 2017 that he followed the keto diet and reported his favorite source of fat was avocado. The guy really loves avocados, and says he probably eats about four a day, adding them to everything from guacamole to smoothies. He rounds out his diet with eggs, sea bass, steak, and vegetables like asparagus. How I lost 50 lbs at 47 years old | My Weight Loss Journey
Blaming your belly fat or those extra five pounds on the fact that you're getting older? Well, now's the time to stop believing that weight gain is an inevitable part of aging. Yes, as we get older our hormone balance shifts in ways that encourage weight gain. For example, testosterone and DHEA levels decline in men, and women's insulin-regulating hormones become less effective. These changes can decrease muscle mass, slow down your metabolism (some reports say by about 2 percent per decade after age 30), and sap your energy while increasing belly fat and insulin resistance. But it’s not hopeless! The more we eat clean, live clean, and work out, the better our hormone balance will be — and the healthier our metabolisms will remain. Here are some tips for mastering weight loss and your metabolism beyond age 40. The Best Science-Based Diet for Fat Loss (ALL MEALS SHOWN!)
Bodybuilders have known for years that strategically placed ‘cheat meals’ can help prevent the metabolic slowdown mentioned above. One meal every five to seven days that contains as many carbs and calories as desired can work. Just make sure not to make a habit out of cheat meals. In fact, you could also just as easily eat clean each day and meet your calorie needs, rather than consistently depriving yourself, then occasionally indulging.
This lower-calorie peanut product is often pitched as a diet-friendly replacement to regular, fatty peanut butter. It comes in a powder that you’re meant to mix with water. The result is a peanut butter imitation that’s nowhere near as oily and creamy as the original. However, a less fatty peanut butter is a less nutritious peanut butter — healthy fats are crucial for maintaining the quality of your skin, hair, and nails as you age. Instead of mixing pasty peanut butter powder, try one of these taste-tested full-fat peanut butters.
Remember that banquet feast scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? The one where Indy and his posse sat down to a scrumptious feast that began with a scorpion and spider salad and ended with a chilled monkey brain sorbet? With some of these celebrities, that's not too far from the level of sheer disgustingness we're dealing with here. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but these weird, questionable, and for some, downright gross celebrity diets are all the proof we need that sometimes, the rich and famous will do just about anything to keep themselves looking trim!
Additionally, attempts to lose weight on low-calorie diets can lead to even more lost muscle. Studies have found that regular resistance or strength training may be a better alternative than your daily runs to preserve and gain muscle — even when coupled with a low-calorie diet. Aerobic exercise is still important, just don’t make it your only form of activity.

Spicy foods have natural chemicals that can kick your metabolism into a higher gear. Cooking foods with a tablespoon of chopped red or green chili pepper can boost your metabolic rate. The effect is probably temporary, but if you eat spicy foods often, the benefits may add up. For a quick boost, spice up pasta dishes, chili, and stews with red pepper flakes.

Kourtney’s not the only Kardashian who’s been a devotee to the low-carb lifestyle. Kim has jumped on the bandwagon, too, and, according to a story published in June 2016 in People, reportedly lost 60 pounds (lbs) after having her son, Saint, while on the Atkins 40 diet. Atkins 40 is a version of the Atkins diet designed for people with less than 40 lbs to lose, and has been around since the 1970s. Atkins is essentially the original keto diet and involves a very limited intake of carbs and high amounts of fat. The main difference is that on the Atkins diet you’ll slowly reintroduce carbs, so ketosis likely will only come into play during phase 1.

This diet has you eating clay (um, yes, clay!) to help cleanse your insides and help you lose weight. Actors including Shailene Woodley (pictured above) and Zoe Kravitz have supposedly admitted to trying this new fad. The theory behind the diet is that the clay passes through your gut and takes with it toxins. Plus, it supposedly fills you up and helps minimize hunger pangs. In reality, this diet is downright dangerous. Putting nonfood items in your system can actually damage the lining of your intestines. Additionally, clay will grab many things as it moves through the intestines, including important nutrients that are waiting to be absorbed by the body. This is one diet I would run far away from.
“Solitude sparks creativity,” Cozias says. Women over 40 aren’t afraid to be alone, in their leisure time or even in life. “Being alone often allows you time to get back to the hobbies and activities you enjoyed doing as a child. You can also get out into nature, absorb, and observe. When you take time for yourself, you get the chance to connect with emotions and your inner voice. This helps bring a quiet repose to your day which can actually make you a much better a partner in relationships.”

A study published in October 2010 in the Annals of Internal Medicine compared two groups of middle-aged people trying to lose weight and their sleep patterns. For four days, one group slept four-and-a-half hours per night, and the second slept eight-and-a-half hours per night. The members in the first group lost 60 percent more muscle and burned 55 percent less fat over the course of the study, demonstrating how sensitive the metabolism is to a lack of adequate sleep — even over a short period of time. 7 Simple Tips To Get A Flat Belly After 40!

47-year-old Jennifer Connelly started out as a child model before making her acting debut in 1984. She went on to win an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her role in A Beautiful Mind. She has since played several other significant parts. With two children she has been included in the lists of world’s most beautiful women by Time, Vanity Fair and Esquire, as well as the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
You already know to keep calories and fat in check, but you'll fan the flames of your metabolism by putting another nutrient on your radar: protein, the building block of lean muscle mass. Each time you eat a protein-rich food—say, a piece of fish or cheese—your body goes to work, breaking it down into smaller particles called amino acids. "The amino acids enter your bloodstream and are then absorbed by your muscle tissues and other cells," says Douglas Paddon-Jones, PhD, director of exercise studies at the University of Texas Medical Branch. "Once the amino acids end up in your muscles, your body starts putting them back together—sort of like Legos—into your muscle tissue." This is called muscle-protein synthesis, and it's the process your body uses to build and maintain muscle mass.

“Obviously all of your leafy greens are going to be really high in antioxidants, which is important for anti-aging,” says LeVeque. “But I would never have something deep in color without fat because most fat-soluble vitamins and antioxidants are 300 percent more bioavailable in the body when eaten with fat.” Now, LeVeque doesn’t mean to add a plate of fatty French fries to your daily lunch so that you're veggies will absorb better, but rather to add foods with good-for-you fats into your already good-for-you salad.  “Add avocado to a leafy green salad or order a green salad and add olive oil to fill up on those antioxidants.”

23. You’re a serial yo-yo dieter – (this was me!) – you’re on the vicious diet treadmill. You’ve done every diet going. You lose weight initially, feel great, finish the diet, and pile it back on again (and some more). We know these diets don’t really work, but each new one has so much promise! And you’ll be more disciplined next time? It’s not about will power though – when you deprive your body of calories, healthy fat, protein or nutrients, it will go into survival mode, trying to protect you. That means your cortisol will rise, your cravings kick in and your metabolism will crash (see no 1, 2, and 20!). Losing Weight Over 50 - How To Get Thin Now That Life Has Changed
Your sleep habits, your eating habits, and your work habits may lead to poor sleep. It's very hard to slim down when you're not resting properly. To lose weight over 40, you should increase your energy using natural, healthy methods. First, make small changes to improve your sleep at night. Then during the day, steer clear of high-calorie coffee drinks and other beverages that cause weight gain and use diet-friendly methods to boost your energy instead. One Tip every woman over 40 needs to know to lose weight permanently
Sound a bit extreme? That's because it is extreme. The Master Cleanse is really more of a fast than a diet. Most people, if they stick to the plan, will lose a bit of weight, largely due to the fact that they are taking in exponentially fewer calories on this diet than they would if they were eating normally. Also probably because mixing all of those things into the same glass is more than a little disgusting. What's more? Once a dieter who has done the Master Cleanse goes back to a normal eating pattern, he or she is likely going to gain the weight right back again.

Chocolate lovers, rejoice: Your favorite treat could be working wonders for your heart—as long as you’re eating the right kind. According to a study in Circulation Heart Failure, women who consume one or two servings of dark chocolate saw their risk of heart disease decrease by 32 percent. For best results, spring for chocolate that has 70 percent cacao or higher; you’ll find more flavanols there. It’s time to sniff your way slim. Switching up your fragrance can do more than make you smell delicious, it can also help you shed those extra pounds as you age. The results of a study published in the Journal of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery reveal that sniffing scents like apple and mint increased weight loss among study subjects, so seek out fragranced products, like tea tree shampoo or apple-inflected perfume, for maximum effect. 9 Ways That Can Help You Reduce Menopausal Belly Fat
3. Keep a food journal or use an app to track what you eat. As we get older, our metabolisms naturally slow down.  That means you need less food.  If you’re still eating as much as you did in your 30’s, you’ve probably had to buy a whole new wardrobe or 2 by now.  Apps like “My Fitness Pal” or “Lose It” help making weight loss goals easier by keeping you on track.  Or you can go old school and write everything down then look up the calories.  Not all calories are created equal, but one is for sure, taking in more than you burn leads to more body fat. Yoga for People Over 40, 50, and 60 - A Routine You Can Do From Home
Also known as the caveman diet, the paleo diet is based on the premise that we should be eating like our prehistoric ancestors if we want to avoid developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. This means you will be eating lots of lean protein, fish, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. As for what you eliminate from your diet, this includes dairy, potatoes, refined sugar, salt, and refined vegetable oils (such as canola). This diet calls for much cooking from scratch, so be prepared to get busy in the kitchen. The payoff? Potentially developing a killer bod.
Exercise is a gift to yourself that keeps on giving. In a phenomenon known as excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), your body can take hours to recover from a robust workout (one intense enough that you can't hold a conversation) and return to its previous resting metabolic rate. The windfall: Your body is actually burning more calories than it normally would—even after you've finished exercising. There’s a catch, though. The better shape you're in, the less benefit you'll get, because your fit body replenishes its energy stores efficiently. You can improve your burn by increasing how often or how hard you work out (think intervals), suggests Walt Thompson, PhD, professor of kinesiology and health and nutrition at Georgia State University.
Drinking two glasses of water before every meal helped dieters lose an average of 15.5 pounds (five pounds more than the non-water drinkers) over three months in a study presented at the American Chemical Society's annual conference. Taking quick hydration breaks throughout the day also boosts your metabolic machinery, says JJ Virgin, celebrity nutritionist and author of The Virgin Diet Cookbook, and research shows staying properly hydrated keeps you feeling energized. Try to consume half your body weight in water ounces, Virgin suggests; a 150-pound person would drink 75 ounces a day.
A good chunk of the canned soups sitting on supermarket shelves can pack in a half day’s worth of sodium as well as additives such as appetite-spiking MSG. Instead, opt for meal prepping your own soup at home with grass-fed bone broth and store leftovers for easy use. “When we ingest bone broth, it acts as an intestinal Band-Aid, protecting and healing the lining of the digestive tract which aids digestion and helps us absorb extra nutrients from the foods we eat,” nutritionist Lauren Slayton, MS, RD tells us. Not to mention, bone broth is chock-full-of collagen, which helps turn back the clock on our skin.
People naturally lose muscle after 40, especially women after menopause. Because muscle burns more calories than fat, this can slow down your metabolism and make it harder to shake those stubborn pounds. Strength-training exercises -- lifting weights or doing body-weight exercises, like push-ups and squats -- at least twice a week can help you keep those muscles.
It sounds counterintuitive; why would you eat continually if you wanted to lose weight? But eating five to six mini meals rather than three larger meals every day keeps your metabolism humming 24/7. "It will also prevent you from going without food so long that you become so hungry you overeat," says Peeke. Try not to let more than four hours elapse between meals and make sure each meal includes protein, for an extra metabolic boost. If you eat a high-fiber breakfast of cereal and fruit first thing, for example, have a midmorning snack, such as yogurt and fruit; lunch (try four ounces of chicken or fish on top of a leafy green salad); another snack, like a banana and a piece of low-fat cheese, in the late afternoon; and a light dinner (think four to six ounces of turkey, salmon, or another lean source of protein with steamed veggies).
my problem is I don’t eat breakfast or lunch during the week cause of work I join the Kennedy Ave Wellness to help loss weight but I eat a big salad and some turkey sausage when I get home then drink I have trouble keeping food down so the clinic gave me something to take with my meal at work can’t eat while cooking therefore when I get done cooking it’s almost time for me to come home
As a general rule of thumb, anything that seems too good to be true probably is. And the case remains for zero-calorie artificial sweeteners found in sugar-free drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Snapple. Yale University researchers found a link between the fake sugar and an increased risk of obesity and excess belly fat. “If drinks with artificial sweeteners are a staple of your diet, it’s best to kick the habit to maintain health and prevent diseases throughout the aging process,” says registered dietician Lisa Moskovitz.
