“I always start with ginger tea, which is black tea with milk, honey, ginger, and cardamom,” Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi told Eat This, Not That! about her breakfast ritual. “Then I’ll have a green juice with kale, beets, mint, apple, carrots, and ginger or a three-egg-white, one-yolk scramble. If I’m hungry, I’ll add half a cup of one percent cottage cheese to the eggs.”
Though people are still talking about the lemon juice and cayenne crash diet that got her into Dreamgirls shape in 2006, these days Bey's much healthier detox method is eliminating all animal products from her diet. It's part of her trainer Marco Borges' 22 Days Nutrition plan—and the singer loves it so much, that she even teamed up with him to create a meal delivery service for the company. "There's no frankenfood," Borges tells us. "It's founded on the principle that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. It's a plant-based diet designed to create lifelong habits that will empower you to live a healthier lifestyle, lose weight or to reverse serious health concerns." (Our social media editor, Kate Winick, tried it to great results.)
A study published in October 2010 in the Annals of Internal Medicine compared two groups of middle-aged people trying to lose weight and their sleep patterns. For four days, one group slept four-and-a-half hours per night, and the second slept eight-and-a-half hours per night. The members in the first group lost 60 percent more muscle and burned 55 percent less fat over the course of the study, demonstrating how sensitive the metabolism is to a lack of adequate sleep — even over a short period of time.
Putting yourself on a very low-calorie diet is a surefire way not to lose. "Your body is programmed to defend your usual weight," says Liz Applegate, Ph.D., professor of nutrition at the University of California at Davis and author of Bounce Your Body Beautiful. "So if you suddenly drop 1,000 calories from your diet, your resting metabolic rate [the number of calories your body burns to maintain basic bodily functions, such as breathing and heartbeat] will automatically slow down, because your body now assumes that you're starving."

Boost your fiber intake and slim down by mixing some flaxseed into your favorite food. Flax is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help reduce inflammation and promote weight loss, and they may even help you fend off another sign of aging, too: the dreaded wrinkle. Flaxseed is loaded with alpha linolenic acid, which researchers at Winnipeg’s St. Boniface General Hospital and Cuba’s VI Lenin University Hospital have linked to improvements in weight and cardiovascular status among study subjects. The omega-3s in flax have also been shown to trigger improvements in the texture and hydration of skin, fighting wrinkles in the process.
Whether due to the night-waking of young children or hot flashes from the onset of perimenopause, middle-age is when sleep quality goes downhill for many women. Lack of sleep has long been linked to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes, because it’s harder for the body to regulate glucose leading to something called insulin resistance, which can cause weight gain. Have a few cups of java for a metabolism boost, but if you’re never seen without a mug at your lips, that could work against you, says nutritionist Amy Shapiro. Caffeine is a natural appetite suppressant. If you’re constantly consuming it, you may not eat much—or realize how hungry you really are—until you get home for dinner. “Not eating enough throughout the day can make your metabolism sluggish,” she says. “By the time you eat dinner, instead of immediately using that food for energy, your body is aggressively storing it as fat, just in case it will be deprived again.” What's Causing Your Belly Fat After 50 and How To Lose It
Are menopausal changes affecting your weight? Many women struggle with weight loss before, during, and sometimes even long after menopause. Weight gain at this time may be related to changes in your hormones. But this is also a time when many women make changes to their daily routines that may affect their weight. For example, after the kids leave home some women are not as busy during the day with non-exercise physical activities like carrying groceries, lifting laundry baskets and other household chores. Evaluate your lifestyle to make sure that a change in your daily habits isn’t affecting your weight. Top 10 Foods That Help Lose Belly Fat - Tips To Burn Belly Fat

Getting enough fiber is key to aging well and staying slim. Fiber not only helps keep you full so you can keep your portions in check, but it also helps lower cholesterol levels and keeps digestive system healthy. Several studies have found that increasing fiber intake by eating more whole grains can reduce your total and bad, LDL cholesterol levels, lower your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and help control your weight. That’s significant considering that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, meaning the best diets for women are packed with fiber. Fiber can be found in whole grains like barley, brown rice, quinoa, oats, bulgur, millet, buckwheat, oat and wheat bran, and more. Fruits and vegetables are also great sources of fiber, as are many plant-based protein sources like beans and lentils. And here are 30 ways to get more fiber in your diet without even trying.
Once upon a time, you probably thought white bread was a basic staple for the pantry. And you’ve maybe switched to wheat, which is something of an improvement—if it was still 1996. But if “enriched flour,” “high fructose corn syrup,” or “sugar” is one of the first few ingredients listed on your bread’s label, you’re not doing your waistline any favors. The trio to try for: Look for bread that comes in 1.) less than 80 calories, 2.) less than 3 grams of sugar per slice, and 3.) lists whole grains as the first ingredient. Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bread and Alpine Valley Organic 21 Whole Grains Bread both fit the bill.

These inexpensive treats pack a double punch at boosting your metabolism. First, the acid in the vinegar helps prevent fat storage in the body. Second, peppers contain capsaicin, the compound that makes them hot and also helps your body burn more energy. Eat pickled peppers in the morning – try mixing them into scrambled eggs – and they’ll provide a metabolism surge to carry you through the day. How To Lose Belly Fat | Is Menopause Really to Blame Over 50?

In late August 2018, the 61-year-old former Today show anchor posted on her Instagram Stories that a week into the diet she did "feel better" but hinted that she'd experienced some symptoms of the keto flu, Women's Health reports. "The fourth or fifth day, I felt a little shaky and headachy, but I feel much better," Couric said on Instagram. Suffice it to say, the mother of two is enjoying incorporating more fat into her diet. "I'm eating mostly protein and some cheese," she said. "And I'm putting half-and-half in my iced coffee, and I gotta tell ya, it's damn good."
Being in your 40s can mean juggling a lot of commitments and eating on the fly. An irregular eating schedule can undercut your metabolism. Research from John Moores University in Liverpool found that women who fluctuated between eating low- and high-calorie meals were less happy with their bodies than those whose plates contained a similar number of calories from meal to meal. But it’s not just fluctuating meal size that can derail your weight-loss goals. A Hebrew University study from 2012 found that mice that were fed high-fat foods sporadically gained more weight than mice that ate a similar diet on a regular schedule. Your move? Figure out how many calories you need to achieve your desired weight, and evenly divide that number by the three, four or five meals and snacks you eat per day. Aim for each of your meals to be roughly that size and eat them at about the same time each day.

Loss of muscle: Like our metabolisms, we also start to lose muscle when we hit our 40s, experiencing a steady decline each decade. Part of this, scientists believe, is that the motor units that make up our muscles decline as we age and that those motor units don't always fire with the same regularity. However, the important takeaway here is this: The biggest factor in losing muscle is the lack of physical activity, which makes exercise a crucial component when it comes to preventing muscle loss.

I eat mostly whole30 (I have 8 ounces of red wine at night). I am 42 year old mother (20 month old and 7 year old) I am having the hardest time losing my BELLY. I was exercising 3 times a week at the gym with circuit training, but my knees are bad so I had to modify all the exercises. Anyway, I just bought book and I am hoping this will help. I have a bad dairy allergy so will need to omit the butter and dairy. Any other advice or help would be greatly appreciated. I hate being a fat mom.

Instead of ditching carbs or going low-fat, try a diet that's rich in veggies, beans, and legumes to increase your metabolism — and keep your blood sugar from spiking. "Many people think weight is all about calories in, calories out, but quality also matters," says Aunna Pourang, M.D. "[In a 2012 study], low-carb diets showed the most increase in metabolism, but also showed an increase in the stress hormone cortisol. This is why scientists concluded that the low-glycemic diet worked the best."

Getting older means a slowing metabolism. But having a protein shake before hitting the sack may boost it, according to one Florida State University study. Researchers found that men who consumed an evening snack that included 30 grams of protein had a higher resting metabolic rate the next morning than when eating nothing. Protein is more thermogenic than carbs or fat, meaning your body burns more calories digesting it.
Hi Kathy - You are doing things right - I am a fan of bodyweight and dumbbells while doing HIIT and circuits, etc. You don't need to do the traditional free weight workout... BUT you do want to make sure you are challenging yourself enough to feel your muscles working - if you can go a little heavier, do it! Also - I don't know how much weight you have to lose - if it's only a few pounds - those are the hardest. However, if you have a lot of weight to lose and the scale isn't budging - you are doing a good amount of exercise - I would really analyze what you are eating - that is at least, if not more than 50 % of the equation. Exercise can help you preserve lean muscle and increase your declining calorie-burn rate, but your children and parents are at ages that require extra care and time. Combine these obligations with a demanding job, and it's tough to meet the 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise and two strength-training sessions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Your bones are constantly renewing themselves; old bone is broken down and new bone is made all the time. Up until about age 30, your bones are built up and broken down at a fairly even pace, but after that point, your bones start to break down at a slightly faster pace than your body can rebuild them. Calcium is essential for building new bone, so getting enough is important for boosting bone regrowth as you age. You also need to get enough vitamin D to make sure you’re absorbing calcium. Megan Fox is just one of a multitude of celebrities that tout the vinegar diet as a way to do just about anything from keeping off the pounds to preventing disease and even clearing your skin. Fox (along with another noted hottie, Miranda Kerr) has gone on record as far back as 2010 saying that taking a few shots of vinegar a day (namely, apple cider vinegar) helps her to lose weight, and "just cleanses out your system entirely."

Why go for the fake stuff when real cheese is so accessible? American cheese is a cheese product (often known as pasteurized processed cheese spread) that’s stuffed with additives—such as phosphates and colorings—to the point where it contains less than 51 percent of actual cheese. And if you take a look at Tostito’s Smooth and Cheesy dip, you’ll find that it reads “cheese flavored” on the jar. Odd, right? Next time you reach for the sandwich staple, consider swapping it out with a slice of goat cheese, which has been shown to increase iron absorption, improves bone formation, and increase the bioavailability of certain minerals more effectively than cow’s milk, a Journal of Dairy Science study found. Woman's Exercise After 40 to Boost Metabolism
"How can I eat this much satisfying food and still lose weight?" Brenda asked during our second meeting. For fat-phobic patients (especially those who lived through the low-fat brainwashing in the '80s), ketogenic diets—which are about 80 to 90 percent fat—can initially seem unbelievably decadent. Yes, that’s a lot of fat, but you’ll focus on filling, healthy sources like avocado, wild-caught fish, nuts, and seeds. Yay for foods that we love!
To clarify, we’re not betting that all the marinaras in the pasta aisle should be avoided like the plague—just some. Processed pasta sauces may contain tomatoes or tomato paste as the first ingredient, but oftentimes, these sneaky saboteurs also contain loads of inflammatory oils, added sugar, and salt. And alfredo sauce is no exception: the creamy white stuff can contain around 20 grams of fat per half-cup serving—an excessive amount to ingest in one sitting.
At 41, these are the things that I notice the most. My body does not bounce back as easily as it once did and I have to work a lot harder to manage my weight. Genetics play a role in the aging process, but our lifestyle choices can help dictate how well our genes treat us as we get older. After turning 40, these are six of the top lifestyle habits to focus on.
11:00AM: Giant salad with fresh organic greens, sprouts, nuts/seeds, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and feta cheese drizzled with olive oil. Or if you’re short on time, whip up a green smoothie blended up with organic veggies like broccoli, celery, spinach, cucumber, fresh mint leaves, olive oil, soaked chia seeds, purified water, and a dash of stevia. A natural way of stimulating hGH (human growth hormone) production is getting enough shuteye. “During sleep, the brain releases human growth hormone (hGH) into the bloodstream,” explains Lisa Jubilee, MS, CDN, founder of Living Proof NYC. “This occurs during the first stage of sleep, but during middle age the body produces less hGH. So if you’re in that age bracket and not sleeping well, your efforts to maintain a healthy weight will be compromised. Don’t skimp on sleep!” Even more reason: these 20 Surprising Ways to Lose Weight While You Sleep!
WHAT IT IS: Hollywood seems to be juiced over this six-juices-a-day, 1,200-calorie intense cleanse. While on the Pressed Juicery diet (said to be a major bloat beater), followers receive a daily supply of juices specially delivered every morning. Each fresh, nutrient-packed drink is designed to replace meals and snacks, and all alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine should be avoided.

After a week or two, your body will adjust to a more active lifestyle. That's when it's time to add workouts that increase metabolism. If you are healthy enough for vigorous exercise add one HIIT or Tabata session per week. Then gradually add one or two more. You can also add up to 3 strength training workouts per week to increase your metabolism with lean muscle mass.
Hi Barbara, I can relate to that. I am 63 and had a lot of stress when my mom got cancer and passed away last year. Is there anyway you can avoid the things that are stressing you out? if not, can you at least try getting away from it by going in your room and listening to music once a day. Try to find little things to make you feel better, like feeding the birds or growing a new plant. I know it sounds trivial, but anything to distract from the stress. Exercise helps me more than anything else. Even when mom had Hospice coming over everyday, I would squeeze in that 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. I use a walking workout DVD by Leslie Sansone. Anyone can do these workouts, very easy. It works wonders. Also, try eating more protein and green fresh veggies (I love steamed broccoli). I hope you start feeling better soon.

You lose muscle mass as you age, which decreases your metabolism, but you can offset that decline by strength training every major muscle group at least two times per week. Putting these habits into place now, in your 40s, means you'll not only lose the weight at a reasonably quick rate, but you'll stay healthy, strong and lean into your later years, too.

“Women over 40 have a very strong sense of self,” says Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics. “They know what they believe in, and why they believe in it. Their confidence often comes from years of living with integrity of their values, and fighting relentlessly to make the world a better place. They know that the smallest things can make the biggest impact.”

Eating protein at breakfast is especially important. "The longest period of muscle breakdown occurs at night, when you're sleeping and not eating for hours at a time," explains Dr. Paddon-Jones. "If you skip breakfast or start your day with a protein-light meal—like a bagel, toast, or cereal—you're missing out on flipping that muscle-building switch back on."
Green tea blasts away the sort of flab we get more of as we age. Researchers attribute the fat-burning properties of green tea to catechins, specifically EGCG — the name of a group of antioxidative compounds that fry adipose tissue by revving the metabolism, increasing the release of flab from fat cells (particularly in the belly), then speeding up the liver’s fat-burning capacity. Green tea is so powerful for weight loss that we made it the centerpiece of our new 7-Day Flat-Belly Tea Cleanse! Test panelists lost 4 inches from their waists!
A lot of people can lose weight without breaking out the calculator at every meal. But as we age, our metabolism slows and we burn fewer calories per day than we did when we were younger, Bede explains. Because of this, it’s essential to ensure that you are not consuming more calories than you’re burning—so if you want to lose lbs, start counting.  How To Lose Belly Fat After 40

Are you a woman over 40 and noticing it’s getting harder to lose weight?  Got some extra stubborn fluff and puff around the middle?  Maybe you’re finding that the diets you did in your 20’s or 30’s don’t work as fast as they used to or don’t even work at all!  If you’re already well past 40, chances are you’ve found it’s harder to lose weight.  And, those inches around your waistline won’t budge.
When you want to add flavor to your food, pass on the salt shaker (you're probably eating too much salt anyway). Instead, reach for hot sauce or chili powder. Chili peppers contain the chemical capsaicin, says Dudash. "The capsaicin in the chili peppers has a thermogenic effect,” she says, causing the body to burn up to an additional 90 calories immediately following a meal. One study shows capsaicin activates brown fat, which increases calorie burning. "The dosage is high, though," says Dudash. "At about 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne per sitting, you've got to really enjoy the heat!"
“Hormones dictate how our body utilizes the energy we give it,” says nutritionist Lisa Jubilee. “Between our reproductive, thyroid and growth hormones, appetite, insulin, and hunger hormone leptin and ghrelin, our bodies have to perform a tricky balancing act to keep us lean, energized and viable reproductive beings.” Those tasks have become much more difficult because of the hormone residues we consume via cage-raised foods. If you want to give your metabolism a leg up, Jubilee says, switch to organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, eggs, and dairy products, thereby avoiding those nasty hormones at mealtime.

I have MS & everyday is an adventure, actually moment to moment. Plus I can’t eat gluten. (Why ppl think it’s a diet thing is wrong) I do like a couple glasses of wine-both parents are really sick so stress is high & doesn’t get along w/MS. I’m 48, 5’6, & weigh 127. I was anorexic from my teens to mid 30s. I can’t get rid of my belly & love handles. I’m SO disgusted in my own body. Got Menopause? Weight Loss for Women Over 40

From her pepperoni-pizza pantsuit to her cow print leather top, if you’ve learned anything about Beyoncé lately—aside from the fact that the woman really can wear anything—it’s that she and Jay-Z are on a vegan adventure. The power couple recently embarked on a 22-day plant-based challenge, complete with mouthwatering Instagram pics hashtagged #22daysvegan. But Queen B and her Brooklyn beau aren’t the first to experiment with dieting. Take a look back at some memorable celebrity diets through the years.

“Your 30s are an awesome time,” says Larson. “This is the decade you want to get and stay physically fit, and focus on maintaining.” In your 20s, you could binge on pizza and wine and work it off quickly, but in your 30s, it takes a little longer. As your muscle mass and metabolism dip, you lose the margin for error. You’re also leaning into your career, experiencing more stress. And women are having babies, losing sleep, and get into irregular eating patterns. “Don’t wait to lose the baby weight,” says Larson. “You don’t want to take 5 to 10 pounds with you into the next decade.”

Conclusion: I wouldn’t recommend exclusively eating smoked salmon and capers any longer than one day, as scurvy is a very real and serious affliction (you know, among other things). But if you love smoked salmon and capers and want to get your lifetime supply of Omega-3s in one fell swoop, this diet plan is for you. Just make sure you don’t have any plans to socialize during the day because it’s sort of awkward to bring a pack of smoked salmon along on, say, a date. Awkward, yes … but not unheard of. Another story for another time.

Olivia Munn recently noted to the Cut that she eats Japanese potatoes for the fitness and aging benefits, saying, "I get my potatoes from a Japanese market. I'll take one sweet potato, slice it into one-inch-thick slices, and then dust it with olive oil and cinnamon, put it in the oven, and do that as dessert. I'll eat those as often as I can — a couple every day. I know there are vitamins or supplements with hyaluronic acid, but I didn't feel like I saw as much of a difference as I did getting it from the natural source." Beats splurging on an expensive night cream, we suppose.
Whole foods contain an assortment of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that act as metabolic spark plugs, giving you the energy to get up and move around. That’s the theory behind increasingly popular diets like Paleo, which eschews processed foods in favor of lean meat and vegetables. Without preservatives and unnecessary crap in your food, your body will burn clean, and that translates to a faster-moving metabolic engine. How To Build Muscle (40+ years old)
To play the role, the ever-gorgeous and fit Charlize Theron (who in real life, is a busy mom of two children via adoption) had to gain 50 pounds of excess weight in order to accurately depict what a real postnatal body looks like. Though Theron is no stranger to self-transformation — as her Oscar-winning turn in “Monster” does attest — she says losing the weight she gained for the part took a lot longer at 42 than it did in her 20s.
The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn—no matter what you’re doing. Hitting the gym helps you build muscle but eating protein keeps your gains from breaking down and slowing your metabolic rate as a result. Protein needs differ by individual, but typically consuming 0.8 to one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day should be sufficient enough to fuel weight loss, says Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN, a New York City-based Dietitian. For a 130-pound (59 kilograms) person, that would equal between 46 and 58 grams of protein. Research has found that because protein is more difficult for the body to break down and digest than other nutrients, it can increase post-meal calorie burn by as much as 35 percent. Aim to incorporate some protein into every meal and snack throughout the day. Super proteins are also a major component of The Super Metabolism Diet to build muscle and help burn energy.

If you're genetically predisposed to gain weight easily, that may be another strike against you. Even if you don't actually gain weight, you may still gain inches around the waist. This weight gain can be so frustrating, it's easy to become obsessed with losing it, starving yourself or exercising too much or maybe even looking into the latest plastic surgery procedure.

Beyoncé used the Master Cleanse fast to slim down for the film Dreamgirls, but it’s a harsh way to lose weight. You subsist on a beverage made of warm water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup for three to 10 days. Weight loss is simply due to caloric restriction, not any magical properties in the brew, which offers little nutrition. In fact, Gwyneth Paltrow says she suffered hallucinations when she tried Master Cleanse.

They say that snacking throughout the day is supposed to make you feel fuller without consuming as many calories, which the former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham took to heart after giving birth to her daughter Harper Seven. To slim back down post-baby, she cut out sugar from her diet and adapted the "Five Hands" meal plan that prescribes snacking on five palm-sized amounts of high-protein foods like salmon, yellowfish tuna sushi, and scrambled eggs in a day.
The movie “Tully” aims to be an honest depiction of life balancing the demands of a newborn with two other children, in all of its spit-up filled, sleep deprived, utterly exhausted glory. It’s about a mom called Marlo (played by Charlize Theron) who just had her third child and is on the precipice of postpartum depression, until her brother sends a night nanny (Tully) to her rescue.

Getting a good night’s sleep is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and also a surprisingly effective means of slimming down. The results of the Nurses’ Health Study reveal that, among a group of 60,000 women studied for 16 years, those who got 5 hours of sleep or less at night increased their risk of becoming obese by 15 percent. Getting adequate rest can also reduce your risk of dementia, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Luckily, you’ll be heading off to the Land of Nod in no time once you learn the 20 Ways to Double Your Sleep Quality!

Load up on low-fat dairy: Women who consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese three to four times a day lost 70 percent more body fat than women who didn't eat dairy in a study published in the January 2003 American Society for Nutritional Sciences Journal of Nutrition. The reason: Calcium, along with other substances in dairy, actually revs up your metabolism, telling your body to burn excess fat faster, according to study author Michael Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. And no, fortified o.j. won't do the trick. The best results come from dairy products instead of from other calcium-rich foods (like broccoli), calcium-fortified products (such as orange juice) or supplements. Women reap the largest fat-burning benefit when they consume three servings of dairy and 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day, Zemel's research shows.

Kourtney’s not the only Kardashian who’s been a devotee to the low-carb lifestyle. Kim has jumped on the bandwagon, too, and, according to a story published in June 2016 in People, reportedly lost 60 pounds (lbs) after having her son, Saint, while on the Atkins 40 diet. Atkins 40 is a version of the Atkins diet designed for people with less than 40 lbs to lose, and has been around since the 1970s. Atkins is essentially the original keto diet and involves a very limited intake of carbs and high amounts of fat. The main difference is that on the Atkins diet you’ll slowly reintroduce carbs, so ketosis likely will only come into play during phase 1.
Hello, all. I am 76 years old and just learning how to take care of myself. Coming from an age where women were not taught about nutrition, exercise, etc., this is proving to be a challenge. I now find that rarely is there any information for this age group. I just joined a gym and have a personal trainer and a new health care provider all who are making my life better and more enjoyable. I would like for articles to be expanded to include those of us in our 60s-80s. I like going to the gym and like the people that I meet there. I also see more seniors my age exercising but mostly men. I am welcomed there and everyone is very supportive. I wish more women would discover this opportunity. I like to also be around young people. Thank you.

Although you shouldn’t go to bed starving (that presents its own sleepytime problems), you also shouldn’t hit the sack completely stuffed. When you eat a large meal before bed, your body works to digest it long into the night — and if your body is still worked up, so are you. The later you fall asleep, the less rest you’ll get, and you’ll wake up feeling groggy and more likely to reach for calorie-dense items. We know that you’re still cool, and you’d like to eat dinner at a more fashionable hour, but supping on the earlier side could be a huge boost to your weight-loss goals. The singer is rumored to have tried Tracy Anderson’s baby food diet, a plan that replaces your first two meals of the day with Gerber’s baby food, followed by a health-conscious dinner. While she has yet to fess up, other celebs have also been linked to the diet, including Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

I'm on the cusp of my fiftieth birthday. My forties have been hard, as reality and gravity collided with me in the middle. But they've also been THE most clarifying and freeing decade of my life. As I look to my future, I fully expect the years to come to be full of wonder. But these last ten years have been lonely too. I've found the voices of women to be somewhat hushed in my middle-ages. It's tempting to sit down quietly in a culture that feeds on youth, as if we have nothing valuable to say. The Best Ways For Men Over 40 To Lose Belly Fat
Now, more than ever, you should put down the sugary sweets, calorie-laden drinks and refined flour. These have empty calories that you can't afford regularly, especially when you're trying to lose weight. Pair your protein with 1/2 cup of whole grains, leafy greens and small amounts of heart-healthy fat, such as that found in nuts, avocados, fatty fish and seeds.
Eager to shave off a few pounds after your 40th birthday? Start by opting for organic produce instead of the conventionally-grown stuff. Research conducted at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology reveals that organochlorine pesticides can alter the levels of thyroid hormone in the human bloodstream, potentially increasing weight gain and causing thyroid health issues. Considering that older women are already at an increased risk for thyroid problems, like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it’s a good idea to go organic ASAP.
This vitamin is essential for preserving metabolism-revving muscle tissue. Unfortunately, researchers estimate that a measly 4% of Americans over age 50 take in enough vitamin D through their diet. Get 90% of your recommended daily value (400 IU) in a 3.5-ounce serving of salmon. Other good sources: tuna, shrimp, tofu, fortified milk and cereal, and eggs.

Unless you’re spiking your home-baked goods with hidden veggies and swapping sugar for stevia, you should actively avoid these sweets. Store-bought muffins and cupcakes make our list of foods that age you because they can contain a full day’s worth of added sugar—and the effects of the sweet stuff on aging are quite bitter. A report in Clinics in Dermatology states that glucose and fructose can compromise the collagen and elastin that support your skin’s elasticity, so avoiding baked goods with added sugars is a sure-fire way to keep wrinkles at bay.
Once you reach age 40, the weight-loss tactics you used in your 20s seem to stop working. You can no longer refuse dessert and fit in extra workout once a week to effortlessly drop a few extra pounds. Even if you make every effort to eat healthfully and exercise when possible, the number on your scale keeps climbing. Weight loss over age 40 still responds to eating fewer calories than you burn, but hormones, life's obligations and natural muscle loss makes this equation harder to achieve. Quick weight-loss efforts only backfire as they fail to teach you how to sustain any weight loss and endanger your energy and health. Stick to the safe rate of losing 1 to 2 pounds per week to get your weight on track.
So I formulate a plan to really buckle down and get serious: I will eat my burgers on lettuce leaves instead of buns, spiralize zucchini in place of pasta, and abstain when we take the boys to the ice cream shop. I will give up cheese. I will stop making homemade bread. And pie. I will strip my diet of all starches and sugar. Maybe I will go Paleo. Or vegan. I'll do that Gwyneth Paltrow cleanse. And start recording every morsel that passes my lips with one of those calorie-tracking apps.

If you're scratching your head wondering why your husband can lose 25 pounds in two months by making some simple lifestyle changes, here's why. “Women naturally have a higher percentage of body fat and lower muscle mass than men do,” explains Gillian Mueller Goddard, M.D., endocrinologist at Park Avenue Endocrinology & Nutrition PLLC in New York City. “Muscle is more metabolically active than fat is, it utilizes more energy in the form of calories. The average man is also just larger than the average woman, so it takes more calories to maintain a larger body mass. Between these two differences, men can consume more calories to maintain or lose weight than women can.” How I lost 50 lbs at 47 years old | My Weight Loss Journey

Brenda stated exactly what so many women have struggled with in the past, including me. As a doctor of gynecology, I frequently get 40-something women in my office working through self-sabotaging menopausal issues including hot flashes, low energy, near-zero libido, weight gain, and weight loss resistance. Hormonal imbalances contribute to many of these problems. When hormones like estrogen, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) nose dive, you’ve got the perfect storm for menopausal miseries. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Easy Weight Loss Tips For Women Over 40 Years Of Age
Everyone knows that Tom and Gisele don’t eat strawberries, but they also don’t eat white sugar, white flour, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, or eggplants. So what do they eat? According to their chef, Alan Campbell, “80 percent … vegetables … and whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, millet, beans. The other 20 percent is lean meats: grass-fed organic steak, duck every now and then, and chicken.”
Eat clean. Our metabolism gets damaged by the chemicals and preservatives in our foods. Things like pesticides, growth hormones, trans fats, HFCS, etc. have all been linked to obesity and have even been labeled "obesogens" within the health and wellness community. Consume your foods in their most natural form as often as possible and this will have a huge impact on your metabolism overall.
Losing weight requires you to burn more calories than you consume. For 1 pound, you have to expend an excess of 3,500 calories. For a safe, one-pound-per-week loss, reduce your caloric intake by 250 and burn 250 calories through exercise. If you can’t exercise every day, that number still has to be achieved through what you eat every day, and how much you exercise on workout days.

Like many of you, these dieters were ignoring a key factor in managing weight: metabolism. Your metabolism, the amount of energy your body uses each day, can determine whether you will be successful in losing weight and keeping it off. Controlling your weight is easier if your metabolism is faster because you can eat more calories. So, is it possible to speed up your metabolism?

At the grocery store, take a turn down the organic produce aisle. Pesticides found on conventionally grown produce, called "obesogens," are blamed for slowing metabolism and predisposing some people to gain weight. "One of the biggest hidden causes of weight loss resistance is toxicity," says Virgin. "Buy organic whenever possible and choose the cleanest, highest-quality cuts of meat," says Virgin.

Your body constantly burns calories, even when you're doing nothing. This resting metabolic rate is much higher in people with more muscle. Every pound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day just to sustain itself, while each pound of fat burns only 2 calories daily. That small difference can add up over time. After a session of strength training, muscles are activated all over your body, raising your average daily metabolic rate.
Robert Young, Ph.D., created the controversial alkaline diet. Health explains the diet claims certain diseases are caused by high acidity in the blood — so you should aim to consume foods that will balance your pH levels. Unfortunately, Young was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. And while the idea of balancing your acid levels through diet has been debunked by many nutritionists, his plan does promote the consumption of healthful foods.

Think about it: Say you're twice as active as an influencer you follow. Eat exactly what she eats, and you'll feel way more tired and way more hungry than she is, since your body likely requires more fuel to operate, Dr. Seltzer says. A more appropriate diet that's based on your specific energy needs may involve way more food—like two ice-cream scoops instead of one!—and give you way more energy so you can live your best life, hanger-free.

16. You’re eating on the run and bolting down your food – when you’re busy it’s easy to just scoff something at your desk or in your car. But when you eat too fast, you’re not chewing your food and it can pass through undigested. And stress can add to that by inhibiting your production of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Not only are you missing the nutrients from the food, but undigested foods can damage your gut lining and seriously hamper your weight loss goals!
IN ALL MY YEARS counseling clients – including many celebrities and dignitaries who must remain unnamed – I've never recommended celebrity-endorsed quick fixes like cleanses over common sense. But whether I like it or not, celebrity fad diets are often mimicked by their fans of all ages, who may be vulnerable to eating disorders and unrealistic expectations about how these eating plans will actually change their lives (or not). Fortunately, there are a few celebrities whose eating, exercise and lifestyle habits my colleagues and I applaud. Here are a few famous folks you can follow with a clear conscious (for now, at least):
We all know sitting around too much is really bad for our health: One meta-analysis reported that prolonged sedentary time was associated with harmful health outcomes, and many other studies have shown it can (obviously!) lead to weight gain. Limiting your time in front of the TV at night and even trying to stand more while you're at work — perhaps with a standing desk — can increase your metabolism, helping you lose weight with minimal effort.
Sadly, you can't scarf down burgers and chocolate shakes like you did in your 20s and expect to lose weight. But you can still enjoy your favorite foods. You just might need to save them for when you really have a hankering—and say goodbye to the treats that fall lower on your list of craveables. Instead of mindlessly dipping into that bag of chips just because it's there, think about what would truly satisfy you. Is it chips or are you actually craving something else? If you decide the chips are worth the calories, then help yourself to a small serving, and savor every bite. (That means no mindless munching in front of the TV.)

Once you hit the big 4-0, it’s not only the number of candles on your cake that signifies you’re getting old, it’s also the achy feeling in your joints and the inability to slash those last five pounds off your frame. While aging in reverse is a miracle we’d all like to get in on, there are a few tweaks you can make to your diet to help slow down the process, such as eliminating certain foods that age you.

The 51-year-old mother of two has always been renowned for stunning looks and talent. Interval training—alternating between high-intensity bursts of movement and a moderate pace—has been shown to amp up metabolism for up to 24 hours postworkout. "You don't have to do a lot to see the benefits," says Wayne Westcott, PhD. "Aim for 15 to 25 minutes of interval training 3 or 4 days per week." If you're just getting started or have a lot of weight to lose, do walking or stationary cycling intervals, which are easier on the joints. If you want to challenge yourself, lace up your sneaks and jump rope or go for a run.
