How My Day Went: The night before, I went to the supermarket to stock up on a wide variety of mush flavors: chicken rice dinner, cinnamon apple, macaroni and beef, and sweat pea. I noticed a super hot guy was standing behind me in line, and I wanted to turn around and explain, “I don’t have any babies; this baby food is for me!” But then I realized that if this guy couldn’t learn to love me and my imaginary babies, then he wasn’t worth my time. (I also didn’t have the emotional energy to explain to him why I, a 26-year-old adult woman, was buying baby food for herself on New Year’s Eve.) The first morning, after sucking down a sweet blend of carrot and apple, I caved. Immediately. That’s right: After just one meal of eating a fairly pleasant, sweet apple-cinnamon mush, I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. I needed real food. So, I tried again the next day. I swallowed my baby breakfast and went for a run. FAT PEOPLE FIGHT OVER MCDONALDs food. Mcfatties
Olivia Munn recently noted to the Cut that she eats Japanese potatoes for the fitness and aging benefits, saying, "I get my potatoes from a Japanese market. I'll take one sweet potato, slice it into one-inch-thick slices, and then dust it with olive oil and cinnamon, put it in the oven, and do that as dessert. I'll eat those as often as I can — a couple every day. I know there are vitamins or supplements with hyaluronic acid, but I didn't feel like I saw as much of a difference as I did getting it from the natural source." Beats splurging on an expensive night cream, we suppose.
The editor and all-around fashion powerplayer says she avoids dieting in general (spoken like a true French woman), but does have a couple of preferred beverages for keeping her svelte, couture-ready figure. "I'm very lowkey with my body," she told StyleCaster recently. "I drink green tea all day long, and at night I drink vodka." As for fitness, she prefers ballet.

ex-Spice Girl, fashion designer and mother of four Victoria Beckham cites the alkaline diet as her method of maintaining her incredibly svelte figure. The diet tries to keep the body's pH level between 7.35 and 7.45 by ultimately aiming the dieter to eat 80% alkaline (fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes – fennel, broccoli, grapefruit and kale are considered the most alkaline) and 20% acidic (wheat and dairy products, coffee, sugar, meat, fish and alcohol) foods.
This can be as simple as doing swings with the kettlebell a few days a week.  Start by warming up with a minute of jumping jacks or jogging. Then, do a minute of push-ups or squats. Move on to your kettlebell swings, squats with weight, or lunges with weights. You could take it a step further with some gym equipment at this point, like bench presses and deadlifts. Just make sure you focus on starting small with correct form–avoiding injury and consistency are keys to success.
Noshing throughout the day is a proven strategy to help you curb hunger and eat fewer calories overall. Now, experts are promoting nibbling versus gorging as a way to keep metabolism running by holding blood sugar levels steady and preventing weight-gain-promoting insulin spikes. Enjoying six small meals a day should do the trick; keep them around 300 calories each, or divide your usual day's calories by six.
If you have room in your budget, put it to belly-fighting use by getting some light-blocking curtains. They make a huge difference when it comes to falling asleep. Outside light makes it harder for your mind to shut down, even if you think you’re immune to such instinctive signals. Melatonin, the hormone involved in putting your body to sleep (a prime fat-burning opportunity) is compromised when light is present. Lower Body Workout That Men Over 40 Need To See
Like the true Italian siren she is, the iconic actress loves pasta so much, she even famously published a cookbook devoted to her native country's cuisine (1971's In the Kitchen with Love). Here's the catch: According to celebrity diet guinea pig and author of I'll Have What She's Having, Rebecca Harrington, the portion sizes are very, very small—the size of a balled-up fist. Still, it's not a bad practice to scale down refined carbohydrates, and in the end, you get your spaghetti fix.
The best exercise for weight loss is strength training, or working out with weights. This will not only prevent the muscle loss discussed above, but will also accelerate your metabolism and replace your current body fat with muscle. Strength training provides many other wonderful health benefits as well, including stronger bones, lower blood pressure, a sharper memory, and reduced risks for heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

One of the most admired and revered women in India as well as in the world. Through her successful career, she has established herself as one of the most popular and influential women in India. Rai has received numerous awards and accolades, and she was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009. No doubt, she’s the “most beautiful woman in the world”. How to Lose Belly Fat in 1 Week
Kourtney’s not the only Kardashian who’s been a devotee to the low-carb lifestyle. Kim has jumped on the bandwagon, too, and, according to a story published in June 2016 in People, reportedly lost 60 pounds (lbs) after having her son, Saint, while on the Atkins 40 diet. Atkins 40 is a version of the Atkins diet designed for people with less than 40 lbs to lose, and has been around since the 1970s. Atkins is essentially the original keto diet and involves a very limited intake of carbs and high amounts of fat. The main difference is that on the Atkins diet you’ll slowly reintroduce carbs, so ketosis likely will only come into play during phase 1.

Hudgens doesn’t shy away from bacon. It’s all part of the High School Musical actress and singer’s keto diet plan, which she says helped her drop 20 lbs from of her 5-foot-2-inch-tall frame in 2017 (in addition to the twice-a-day SoulCycle sessions, that is). Her advice? She told People News in April 2017 that it’s best to view food as fuel. She advises eating the things that give you long-lasting energy, and don’t stress about counting calories.

When it comes to feeding her family of five, the Food Network star’s go-to is a hearty protein and flavorful roasted veggies. “We do two things almost every week — either grilled steaks marinated in herbs or roasted chicken,” she says. “There’s always a roasted vegetable, like Brussels sprouts or sweet potatoes or broccolini — whatever’s in season. I love to shop at the farmer’s market or grab something from the garden and roast that.”

If you’re shuttling little people around all afternoon and evening, it's tough to get a healthy meal on the table before bedtime. “The key is to set aside 15 minutes every weekend to plan a quick healthy dinner for each weeknight,” says Ansel. And they don’t have to elaborate. A turkey sandwich or peanut butter and jelly is better than ordering Chinese food or baking a frozen pizza, she says.

Although it may not directly influence metabolism, wolfing down your food makes it more likely you'll eat more, says a study published by the American Dietetic Association. Another study found even among women who didn't diet, reducing stress and practicing mindfulness can prevent fat gain. "It takes about 20 minutes before a hormone called cholecystokinin (CCK) tells your brain to stop eating," says Virgin. "When you engulf a burger and fries, you don't give CCK enough time to relay the message to your brain, and you eat too much." In addition, says Virgin, speed eating also raises fat-storing insulin levels. "Just as important as eating the right diet is slowing down and becoming mindful when you eat."
A little green tea in your cup could yield a lot of weight loss. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition reveals that adding green tea to subjects’ meal plans increased their fat-burning ability by a whopping 12 percent. Even better, green tea’s combination of antioxidants and caffeine can give you the boost you need to fend off those energy lulls that often accompany middle age. After suffering for many years with everything from bullying to bulimia, Lady Gaga dropped 25 to 30 pounds with a low-glycemic index diet. Gaga is said to have followed the 5-Factor Diet, only eating healthy foods from five categories – healthy fats, fiber, "low-glycemic" carbohydrates, protein and sugarless drinks. (The glycemic index ranks foods by the speed at which they raise blood sugar levels as they get digested.) She avoided highly-processed meats, fried foods, foods high in saturated fat (like butter, ice cream and desserts), simple carbohydrates (including white bread and white rice) and sugary treats. Her plan included eating five times per day, usually broken down into two meals and three light snacks. Lose Belly Fat in 3 Days with a Fasting Diet
A weight-loss diet plan when you're over 40 looks like any healthy plan, but with moderate portions that fit your calorie needs. No one diet is best; instead, certain habits help you succeed. Avoid sugary sweets, especially soda and baked treats, as well as refined grains found in white bread, pasta and rice. Your intake of alcohol, even that supposedly healthy glass of red wine, should also be limited. INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM II How I now eat 1000 MORE calories, look leaner & feel better
Our bodies need dietary fat—particularly healthy oils—in order to lose weight and function properly. The right kinds of fats and oils help quash hunger, maximize your metabolism, and speed nutrients through your body. Healthy monounsaturated fats like olive oil can actually help the body to burn calories. Extra virgin olive oil may also increase blood levels of serotonin, a hormone associated with satiety. Plus, olive oil is also loaded with polyphenols, antioxidants that help battle many diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and brain deterioration.
For new moms, it’s a win just to slip in a shower and brush your teeth. And though it seems impossible, you can make working out work. Ansels says that finding a gym with child care or subscribing to online workouts that you can do during naps can be a big help. For an active recovery, take long walks with your baby in his or her stroller—and you might be surprised how quickly you can bounce back into shape, says Ansel.
Remember when you were 23 years-old and wouldn’t even dream of spending your coveted cash on letting someone else mow your lawn, wash your car, or paint your living room? Try tapping into that scrappy, resourceful inner you a bit more and you’ll wind up torching calories. For example, a 150-pound person will burn around 200 calories if they wash and wax their car for 40 minutes. “To balance hormones, such as leptin, the diet must contain high fiber vegetables to stabilize leptin levels by making you feel full longer. They’ll balance cortisol, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants,” explains Lisa Avellino, Fitness Director at NY Health and Wellness. “The fiber found in cabbage, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts help stabilize blood sugar and insulin by slowing down digestion.”

The older, wiser, less-bendy sister of yoga, meditation is an amazing activity that people can reap major rewards from. Studies show that people who regularly practice mindfulness meditation have more activity in their left prefrontal cortexes, which makes you calm and happy. Plus, a 2014 study found that individuals who meditate are less likely to overeat or give in to emotional eating. To get started, unroll a yoga mat or sit on a carpet in a sunny room (east-facing if possible) and take five uninterrupted minutes thinking about something that you’re grateful for. You’re supposed to lose a few LBs, but even if you don’t, we guarantee you’ll still be glad you made meditation part of your life.
Kourtney Kardashian is considered among the healthiest of the Kardashian bunch. According to a People story from February 2018, Kardashian shared in her app that going keto was a “really positive experience.” She said she first went keto after doctors found high levels of mercury in her blood. She now eats cauliflower rice or broccoli rice in place of carbs. But just because she’s a reality TV star doesn’t make her immune to the negative side effects associated with this way of eating. Kardashian admits she suffered from headaches and low energy for a couple of weeks and makes the diet more sustainable by giving herself a “treat yourself day” every week.
Been following you for a little while now. Love, love, love all your content. I’m 61, will turn 62 next May. I’ve lost 80 lbs. so far and needed to ratchet it up a notch to keep going towards my goal of 130 lbs. after plateauing. I decided my walks were no longer effective enough exercise, running or sprinting is difficult/painful because of a high school football knee injury many years ago that I re-aggravated playing tennis a few years later. I decided to try to create a HIIT routine based on basic calisthenics, kettle swings, jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches, deep knee squats holding 10lb dumbbells. I’ve found that jumping jacks and push-ups in same routine makes an arthritic shoulder ache so I need to eliminate one of them and I believe the squats are what are causing my bad knee to ache badly later on in the day. Any advice for gentlemen of a certain age with joint issues who wish to challenge themselves athletically? Thanks for you’ve done for me so far and continue to do.

4. You’ve got some unwelcome guests living in your gut – our gut flora (our micro-organism friends) outnumber our own cells by 10 to 1! You could say we are just providing a home for the billions of them. I’m talking bacteria, yeast, fungus, viruses and parasites. We all have good and bad types and generally they all live happily together, but if you have too many of the bad guys through either too many antibiotics, poor diet, infection or other reasons, then they can hugely impact your weight loss efforts.
Speaking of social media, it’s time to take a cue from those iPhone-crazy millennials because it might just be the weight loss boost you want! Here’s what’s up: Holding onto that food memory may help you eat less at breakfast. And lunch, and dinner. An analysis on a number of “attentive eating” studies printed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that if people recall their last meal as being filling and satisfying, they tend to eat less during their next meal. Researchers found techniques like writing down or drawing meals (and even keeping food wrappers and receipts!) to be particularly beneficial.

If you always opt for coffee over tea, you could be missing out on a major metabolism boost. In a recent 12-week study, participants who drank 4-5 cups of green tea daily, then did a 25-minute workout, lost an average of two more pounds and more belly fat than the non tea-drinking exercisers. What’s its magic? The brew contains catechins, a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells and helps speed the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy.

Want to lose weight and have healthy meals you can prepare quickly? That's the premise behind celeb trainer Harley Pasternak's 5-Factor Diet, which calls for three meals and two snacks daily. In other words? If certain foods seem to open the floodgates for you without fail, it might be better to steer clear altogether and stick with treats that don't trigger a binge. It might feel tough at first. But instead of seeing it as deprivation, reframe your decision as a choice—and a positive one at that. With one of the most enviable figures in Hollywood, Megan Fox looks to the 5 Factor Diet, developed by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. A five-week plan, the diet involves eating five meals a day made with five ingredients per meal that must include protein, healthy fats, healthy carbs, fibre and a sugar-free drink, one 'cheat day' is allowed were dieters can eat what they like.

A lot of women say stand up for yourself early and often, and don’t be afraid to to list and guard your accomplishments. Too many young women give away credit and don’t even get it. Your career path may change and shift a lot over the next few decades, but know what you do has value. Also, save some money. Even if it’s just a tiny amount, start saving now. You’ll learn to manage money better as you age, but even a small nest egg could make a big difference in the future.

When you’re busy with work, kids, and life, you can be tempted to grab food on-the-go or multitask through a meal. But you’re more likely to overeat -- and be hungry again soon after -- if you don’t focus on your food. Sit down for meals and tune in to what’s on your plate (not what’s on your TV or computer screen). That helps your brain realize when you’ve had enough.
To achieve a better macronutrient ratio, don’t worry about counting macros with fancy apps. All you need to do is break down your meals like this: center your meals around non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, peppers, zucchini, mushrooms and green beans. Fill at least half of your plate with these lower calorie, high-fiber foods to satisfy hunger and pack in the nutrition. Despite her culinary chops, the Barefoot Contessa star keeps it simple in the mornings. “I’ve had the same thing for breakfast every single day for ten years: coffee and McCann’s quick-cooking Irish oatmeal,” she said. Other staples in her kitchen include “a bowl of lemons on the counter (and other citrus), butter, eggs, Parmesan cheese, and chocolate.”

Throwing your all into a meal plan that takes too much time to assemble, involves eating more frequently than your schedule allows, or contains expensive ingredients that you—and your budget—can't sustain in the long term could chip away at your best intentions: "It sets you up for failure before you begin," Dr. Seltzer says. "And giving up can leave an emotional impact."

The Deal: Their “whole thing” is complicated for several reasons. To start, Tom Brady claims to have never consumed coffee in his life (!!), which is why the no-caffeine part of their regimen is easy for him. Other elements of their diet: Avoid “nightshade” plants, which includes a slew of random but essential ingredients like peppers, eggplants, mushrooms, potatoes and tomatoes. According to their personal chef, their diet consists of roughly 80 percent vegetables, and the rest is lean protein. No white flour or sugar. Many celebs, including Megan Fox and Heidi Klum, have touted the benefits of vinegar to help cleanse your insides and lose weight. The theory here is that apple cider vinegar helps make the digestive tract more alkaline, which helps decrease the toxins stored in your body. Additionally, claims have been made that apple cider vinegar helps activate the liver to rid your body of extra fat and protein. Unfortunately, none of these claims are scientifically verified. Further, the primary purpose of your liver is to cleanse your body, and it doesn’t need the help of vinegar or anything else to do its job.

Ideally, we sleep about eight hours for every 24. Most people spend another seven to ten hours sitting at their desk. That means most of us spend the overwhelming majority of our time sedentary. Our bodies weren’t designed for this level of inactivity—most of humans’ evolutionary history involved being active, searching for food and fuel. Nutritionist Lisa Jubilee says that one way to burn more calories daily is to stand more and sit less. She cites a British study which found that standing at work burned 50 more calories per hour than sitting. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, consider this: If you stand for just three hours of your day, in one year you’d expend more than 30,000 extra calories—which amounts to about 8 lbs of fat! Your bones are constantly renewing themselves; old bone is broken down and new bone is made all the time. Up until about age 30, your bones are built up and broken down at a fairly even pace, but after that point, your bones start to break down at a slightly faster pace than your body can rebuild them. Calcium is essential for building new bone, so getting enough is important for boosting bone regrowth as you age. You also need to get enough vitamin D to make sure you’re absorbing calcium.

What should you be having? Morning munchies that are slow to digest and leave you feeling fuller longer. Try a mix of lean protein with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats, like this power breakfast, recommended by Berardi: an omelet made from one egg and two egg whites and a half cup of mixed peppers and onions, plus a half cup of cooked steel-cut oats mixed with a quarter cup of frozen berries and a teaspoon of omega-3-loaded fish oil.
But there are certain things everyone over the age of 40 should be doing to guarantee that the second half of life’s big game is as exciting as the first half. After all, once you hit 40, your body begins to lose muscle mass, the lean tissue that helps you burn fat and calories; women drop about half a pound of muscle per year after crossing 4-0, according to Pamela Peeke, author of Body for Life for Women. That’s why 40 tends to be the dividing line between those who are headed for a long, healthy lifetime of lean, and those who are headed for an early (and probably much larger) grave.

Eager to shave off a few pounds after your 40th birthday? Start by opting for organic produce instead of the conventionally-grown stuff. Research conducted at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology reveals that organochlorine pesticides can alter the levels of thyroid hormone in the human bloodstream, potentially increasing weight gain and causing thyroid health issues. Considering that older women are already at an increased risk for thyroid problems, like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it’s a good idea to go organic ASAP. “Hormones dictate how our body utilizes the energy we give it,” says nutritionist Lisa Jubilee. “Between our reproductive, thyroid and growth hormones, appetite, insulin, and hunger hormone leptin and ghrelin, our bodies have to perform a tricky balancing act to keep us lean, energized and viable reproductive beings.” Those tasks have become much more difficult because of the hormone residues we consume via cage-raised foods. If you want to give your metabolism a leg up, Jubilee says, switch to organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, eggs, and dairy products, thereby avoiding those nasty hormones at mealtime.
Your thoughts about finding a trainer actually echoes what I had started thinking. I only hesitate because of my work schedule. I put in 75 hours last week, which although a little heavier than usual, isn’t unheard of. Although never legally married, I consider myself a widower and as a single guy I do all the cooking, cleaning, shopping, laundry etc. Plus I have two dogs that require my attention daily. So I’ve become a lot more of a homebody than I ever thought I would. The nearest reputable gym that I know of is about a 30 minute drive from my home, I just can’t commit to a 2 hour time requirement so I’ve been doing the best I can at home. I am thinking about doing a 1 month membership though, just to get the proper mentoring and training but just keep putting it off. Perhaps this winter when there is less outside work that needs done and I have a little more time on my hands. Thanks again for your response and advice.

Leave it to Madonna to come up with an attention-grabbing diet that has been right in front of our faces, literally, all along. When following the Air Diet, she goes through all the motions of eating: having someone plate the food, put it in front of her, stab it with a fork, and hold it up to her (you don’t think she does that stuff herself, do you??). That’s where it stops.  There is no actual eating involved, unless it's a "soup" of water and salt. We always called that a gargle.

Who says sex appeal fades as you age? Many women say that their 40s are the sexiest decade. Often, women experience renewed confidence, professional success and a more sultry sense of self during this decade. So why not use it to your advantage? If you're trying to reshape your body or lose weight in your 40s, a renewed sense of confidence and sex appeal will help you reach your goals. You might think that you’ll feel better about your body after the diet, but the truth is that if you feel better about yourself before you diet, you'll be better equipped to manage the lifestyle changes necessary for weight loss.
It can be done! I’m male in my mid 50’s and have now retired from a desk job. I’ve managed to lose around 30lbs over 12 months, and have my weight down to around 170lbs – back to around my weight 30 years ago! Now, freed from a desk, I walk much more – nothing crazy – around 8-9 miles per day ( according to my fitbit), but only around 4-5 miles of that is actually “going for a walk” the rest just general moving about!
Make sure you eat breakfast. Eating a nutrient-rich morning meal (like oatmeal with almonds and berries, or a spinach-and-feta omelet with a slice of whole-grain toast) shortly after getting out of bed literally wakes up your metabolism. "Eating breakfast gets the engine going and keeps it going," Hyman explains. It's hard to argue with these results: According to the National Weight Control Registry (an ongoing study that tracks 5,000 people who lost an average of 66 pounds and kept it off more than five years), 78% of those who keep it off eat an a.m. meal every day.
Sometimes, you have to eat fat to lose fat. Specifically, healthy fats — those with omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, and oleic acid — dramatically help to satisfy hunger and fire up your metabolism. Think avocados, walnuts, coconut oil, and even full-fat dairy. (Low-fat often does more harm than good, which is why full-fat is one of the 20 Supermarket Trends of 2016!) To make sure you’re eating the right kind of fat, check out our exclusive report on the 20 Best Full-Fat Foods for Weight Loss.

23. You’re a serial yo-yo dieter – (this was me!) – you’re on the vicious diet treadmill. You’ve done every diet going. You lose weight initially, feel great, finish the diet, and pile it back on again (and some more). We know these diets don’t really work, but each new one has so much promise! And you’ll be more disciplined next time? It’s not about will power though – when you deprive your body of calories, healthy fat, protein or nutrients, it will go into survival mode, trying to protect you. That means your cortisol will rise, your cravings kick in and your metabolism will crash (see no 1, 2, and 20!).
Green tea blasts away the sort of flab we get more of as we age. Researchers attribute the fat-burning properties of green tea to catechins, specifically EGCG — the name of a group of antioxidative compounds that fry adipose tissue by revving the metabolism, increasing the release of flab from fat cells (particularly in the belly), then speeding up the liver’s fat-burning capacity. Green tea is so powerful for weight loss that we made it the centerpiece of our new 7-Day Flat-Belly Tea Cleanse! Test panelists lost 4 inches from their waists!

The great news: You don't have to spend hours in the weight room. "Research shows that you'll have the same muscle gains with 2 days of strength training as you'd have with 3," says Dr. Westcott. In a recent study, participants who performed a strength-training program twice a week for 10 weeks had the same increase in muscle mass—an average of 3.1 pounds—as those who added an extra weekly session.
Sadly, you can't scarf down burgers and chocolate shakes like you did in your 20s and expect to lose weight. But you can still enjoy your favorite foods. You just might need to save them for when you really have a hankering—and say goodbye to the treats that fall lower on your list of craveables. Instead of mindlessly dipping into that bag of chips just because it's there, think about what would truly satisfy you. Is it chips or are you actually craving something else? If you decide the chips are worth the calories, then help yourself to a small serving, and savor every bite. (That means no mindless munching in front of the TV.)
After a hard day at work, it’s temping to zone out in front of the TV. But did you know lean people watch less? A recent analysis of studies found that for every two hours spent watching TV, the risk of developing diabetes or heart disease, and early death increased by 20, 15 and 13 percent, respectively. Scientists are still figuring out exactly why sitting is so detrimental to health, but one obvious and partial explanation is that the less we move, the less fuel we require; the surplus blood sugar floods the bloodstream and contributes to diabetes and other weight-related risks that crop up in the 40s and beyond.
"Just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean they know what they are talking about in terms of diet and health," says Samantha Heller, MS, RD, senior clinical nutritionist and exercise physiologist at the New York University Medical Center in New York City. Acting advice can certainly come from celebrities, but nutrition advice should come from a health care professional such as a registered dietician. Brenda swapped out her adrenal-zapping cardio (which she hated anyway!) for weight resistance and high-intensity interval training. Another study found menopausal women who combined a ketogenic diet with resistance training became leaner than those who didn’t.

I am now 75 and have a BMI of 26 which is technically overweight for my height but not by much. I have found that I have had to make changes to my diet so that they become a habit. For example I only have fruit and yogurt after a meal and never a pudding. When at events where cake is handed around I can happily say no as I find it too sweet now. People sometime say oh you are being so good, but I’m not I just don’t enjoy it anymore and I won’t eat it just to please others. I have also discovered that it is good to eat plenty of protein usually in the form of poultry and a high protein low fat cheese I have discovered.

I’ll be sharing a list of 15 things that no woman who is middle-aged and older should have. But this isn’t going to be one of those judgmental lists that makes you feel bad about getting older. This list is meant to be empowering, and help you get rid of the unnecessary clutter that tends to build up over the years! As older women, we have moved into a more mature and practical stage of life, and our homes should reflect that! So get those garbage bags ready, because it’s time to clear out some clutter. :-)
Making an omelet? Forget separating the white from the yolk and embrace the whole egg! The healthy fats within the yolks can help you feel fuller longer and curb cravings, explains Kayleen St. John, RD. Not to mention, choline—a belly fat-blasting nutrient—is only present in the orange part of the egg, rather than the whites, that most dieters tend to avoid. Next time you’re whipping up a scramble, crack the whole egg, yolk and all, into the pan.

Curcumin, this bright-colored root spice’s main antioxidant, has shown to prevent a plethora of ailments from inflammation to cancer. Good thing you can easily reap its benefits by sprinkling turmeric into practically anything! (We especially love it on over-easy eggs.) To enhance its effects, pair turmeric with black pepper, as the latter activates the former’s bioavailability.

Eva Mendez has said she includes rice and beans, a dish she grew up with and adores, in her diet. Whether you're trying to lose weight or not, it's so important to eat foods you love on a regular basis. She also reportedly makes sure to drink plenty of water, which is essential for healthy hydration and to help move foods along in the system. My one caution with prescribing Eva's eating pattern: She's said to eat the same meals for lunch and dinner every day, while I think it's important to have variety in your diet – especially in terms of fruits and vegetables – to give you enough different nutrients. Having variety also helps beat boredom and ensures a great chance of sticking to a plan. Fit and Fabulous at 50: My Amazing Body Transformation. BEFORE & AFTER Weight Loss INSPIRATION!

While meat packs a lot of protein in one shot, getting your protein only from animal sources could actually speed muscle loss, according to a 2012 review by the International Osteoporosis Foundation Nutrition Working Group. Why? Meats, as well as grains like wheat and corn, are acid-producing foods that stunt muscle-protein synthesis. The good news: Fruits and vegetables are alkalizing and can help offset some of the muscle-robbing effects of meaty, starchy meals. "Plus, there are a lot of delicious vegetarian sources of protein," says Dr. Gerbstadt. "Try experimenting with tofu, lentils, or beans. They taste great and tend to be lower in calories." When you opt for animal protein, avoid high-fat sources such as regular ground beef, bacon, whole milk, or full-fat cheese.
Bodybuilders have known for years that strategically placed ‘cheat meals’ can help prevent the metabolic slowdown mentioned above. One meal every five to seven days that contains as many carbs and calories as desired can work. Just make sure not to make a habit out of cheat meals. In fact, you could also just as easily eat clean each day and meet your calorie needs, rather than consistently depriving yourself, then occasionally indulging.

(Low-fat often does more harm than good, which is why full-fat is one of the 20 Supermarket Trends of 2016!) It’s no surprise that as we age, our metabolism slows down, says Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN, founder of Just for Today. There’s another big reason to put your energy into eating well: you probably don’t have as much time to focus on working out. “In your 20s, the first instinct to drop pounds is often to hit the gym with increased intensity. But for those of us who are older and might be leading busier lives, running to the gym for an hour each evening isn’t always a feasible option,” says Pam Nisevich Bede, RD, CSSD, sports dietitian for Abbott’s EAS Sports Nutrition. (These 8 at-home workouts can certainly come in handy!) “A healthy diet is now your best friend when trying to lose weight.” It comes with added perks, though: A balanced diet can also energize your day, allowing you to make healthier decisions, and fuel your workouts most efficiently, she adds.
Many people become more sedentary as they age because the effects of injuries and impact have made working out a painful prospect. That’s why swimming is a great workout. The fact that it’s low impact is just one reason: It also builds endurance. One study of men and women who engaged in swim training for 12 weeks showed that their maximum oxygen consumption improved by 10 percent, and stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped with each heartbeat, which indicates the organ’s strength) improved as much as 18 percent. It's tempting to curl up on the couch the minute PMS mood swings and bloat strike, but you'll lose more weight if you exercise during those two weeks before your period, according to a recent study at the University of Adelaide in Australia. "Women burned about 30 percent more fat for the two weeks following ovulation to about two days before menstruating," says study coauthor Leanne Redman. Here's why: The reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone are at their peak then — and because they promote the body's use of fat as energy, more fat is burned off when you exercise during this time.
A 2014 study found that the type of fat we consume might make all the difference. Participants in the study were asked to eat 750 extra calories every day for seven weeks. Those having excess calories from saturated fats had activated cells that promoted fat storage in the belly and increased insulin resistance. However, individuals who had a high consumption of polyunsaturated fats found in fatty fish, nuts and seeds, gained less abdominal fat and were more likely to increase muscle mass instead.

In my 70 s and working on the extra 10kg that has accumulated over the past 15 years, I find a low carb/high protein diet works for me. Carbs only after exercise. I exercise daily, mainly walking, alternating fast and slower intervals. Pilates classes twice a week. Housework and gardening also keep me active. I have lost the weight without feeling hungry. I also enjoy a glass of wine most evenings. Although I understand the logic of calories consumed v calories burned I feel that I am consuming more calories on this diet but still losing weight.
You lose muscle mass as you age, which decreases your metabolism, but you can offset that decline by strength training every major muscle group at least two times per week. Putting these habits into place now, in your 40s, means you'll not only lose the weight at a reasonably quick rate, but you'll stay healthy, strong and lean into your later years, too.

“The 50s come as a shock to many people,” warns Larson. “People who have never had trouble losing or maintaining their weight suddenly find it’s a real struggle.” You might have better life balance at this point, but your body is downshifting to a different gear, and getting super efficient at storing fat. “That doesn’t mean you give up, now or ever!” says Larson. “But you have to adjust your mindset, expect changes to come slowly, and set a new weight goal.” Larson recommends tapping up your activity and reducing your calories by 300 to 400 per day, in order to maintain.
Getting enough fiber is key to aging well and staying slim. Fiber not only helps keep you full so you can keep your portions in check, but it also helps lower cholesterol levels and keeps digestive system healthy. Several studies have found that increasing fiber intake by eating more whole grains can reduce your total and bad, LDL cholesterol levels, lower your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and help control your weight.
