Aerobic exercise may not build big muscles, but it can rev up your metabolism in the hours after a workout. The key is to push yourself. High-intensity exercise delivers a bigger, longer rise in resting metabolic rate than low- or moderate-intensity workouts. To get the benefits, try a more intense class at the gym or include short bursts of jogging during your regular walk. What Every Woman Over 50 Needs To Know About Weight Loss
If you’re having trouble losing weight after your 40th, it’s time to ask your doctor about a thyroid screening. Women are more likely to develop thyroid health issues than their male counterparts, which can lead to symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, and depression. Fortunately, for many people, the problem can be fixed with medication and dietary modification, getting you back on track to the body you want in no time.

before and after 40 pounds

According to celebrity nutritionist, Kelly LeVeque (her clients include actress Jessica Alba and supermodel Molly Sims), you should already be following a healthy eating plan well before you hit the big 4-0, but it’s especially important to be cognizant of your diet once you pass that milestone. So, we tapped LeVeque for her best nutrition tips for staying slim, cutting health issues and boosting skin health as you make your way through that fourth decade of life.

I was the type of person who up until my late 30s could eat whatever I wanted and never work out and rarely gained a pound. If I wanted to “loose” weight meaning the five pounds of holiday weight I had put on all I had to do was start exercising doing some cardio and it fell off. Then all the sudden that stopped and now I am 20 pounds over weight and almost 41 years old and the only way for me to loose weight is to starve. I have been tested for medical conditions, I do not take any medications. I have been to a nutritionist, several actually. I have revamped my diet, I have done weight watchers, I hired a trainer and I work out 6 days a week. I have been told work out less you will be less hungry, did that nada. Cut carbs, cut diary, tried that too. The conclusion I have come to is that due to my small frame (I am only 5’1) I have to work out daily and not eat more than 1200 calories a day if I want to lose weight. I cannot do that, it makes me utterly miserable and angry. I had my metabolism tested via one of those breathing machines and it was so slow. Doctors will never admit that anyone should eat less than 1200 but my doctor looked at me and basically said 1200 is the maximum you can eat. I have never yo yo dieted, in fact I was never on a diet until I was 38, never needed to be. My Mom had the same exact thing happen to her. At this point I have two choices, be miserable and hungry all of the time, or be 20 pounds over weight and be happy, I chose the latter. Trying to live and eat 1200 calories a day every single day, is not reasonable and is a recipe for failure. I compare this to men who don’t want to admit that as they age they need Viagra. All of them say oh no I have sex like a 20 year old, no you don’t. And they don’t talk about their struggles with each other they just boast. For women I think we may just need to accept that extra 20 pounds that comes along with age, rather than fighting a loosing battle and being miserable.
Are menopausal changes affecting your weight? Many women struggle with weight loss before, during, and sometimes even long after menopause. Weight gain at this time may be related to changes in your hormones. But this is also a time when many women make changes to their daily routines that may affect their weight. For example, after the kids leave home some women are not as busy during the day with non-exercise physical activities like carrying groceries, lifting laundry baskets and other household chores. Evaluate your lifestyle to make sure that a change in your daily habits isn’t affecting your weight.

Increased insulin resistance might leave you feeling hungrier. Dividing up your food into three moderately sized meals and one to two small snacks will keep your blood sugar levels steady while combatting the urge to nibble on junk, Largeman-Roth says. Piling your plate with more low-calorie, high-volume foods—like fruits and vegetables—can help fill you up, too. (These 20 low-calorie salads that won't leave you hungry fit the nutritional bill.)

40 year old weight loss before and after

A study published in a 2008 issue of "Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism" found that non-exercisers who did three workouts consisting of 10 rounds of four minutes of all-out effort followed by two minutes of easy effort three times per week for six weeks increased their muscles' abilities to burn fat and carbohydrates, which helps with weight loss. Strength training is also an important strategy in weight loss after 40.
The best exercise for weight loss is strength training, or working out with weights. This will not only prevent the muscle loss discussed above, but will also accelerate your metabolism and replace your current body fat with muscle. Strength training provides many other wonderful health benefits as well, including stronger bones, lower blood pressure, a sharper memory, and reduced risks for heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
Sleeping in a cool room seems to increase people’s percentages of brown fat — a type of fat that acts more like muscle — according to a 2014 study conducted by Celi and colleagues at the National Institutes of Health. The research involved five male volunteers, who slept in climate-controlled rooms with only light pajamas and bedsheets, for several months. After four weeks of 66-degree nights, they’d nearly doubled their amounts of brown fat, and were also burning a few more calories throughout their days.

One thing to keep in mind? Alcohol counts as a treat, so don't let yourself go overboard. "You could fit two to four glasses of wine per week into a weight loss program," Largeman-Roth says. Just make a point to stick to the five-ounce recommended serving size, since it can be easy to over-pour when you don't pay attention. And yes, if you enjoy a glass with dinner, it means you should skip out on that piece of chocolate for dessert. (If mixed drinks are more your thing, don't miss these 8 low-calorie cocktails—that actually taste good.)

“Hormones dictate how our body utilizes the energy we give it,” says nutritionist Lisa Jubilee. “Between our reproductive, thyroid and growth hormones, appetite, insulin, and hunger hormone leptin and ghrelin, our bodies have to perform a tricky balancing act to keep us lean, energized and viable reproductive beings.” Those tasks have become much more difficult because of the hormone residues we consume via cage-raised foods. If you want to give your metabolism a leg up, Jubilee says, switch to organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, eggs, and dairy products, thereby avoiding those nasty hormones at mealtime.
Throwing your all into a meal plan that takes too much time to assemble, involves eating more frequently than your schedule allows, or contains expensive ingredients that you—and your budget—can't sustain in the long term could chip away at your best intentions: "It sets you up for failure before you begin," Dr. Seltzer says. "And giving up can leave an emotional impact."

Brenda stated exactly what so many women have struggled with in the past, including me. As a doctor of gynecology, I frequently get 40-something women in my office working through self-sabotaging menopausal issues including hot flashes, low energy, near-zero libido, weight gain, and weight loss resistance. Hormonal imbalances contribute to many of these problems. When hormones like estrogen, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) nose dive, you’ve got the perfect storm for menopausal miseries. But it doesn’t have to be this way!

This diet, created by trainer-to-the-stars Tracy Anderson, has reportedly been tried by the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Lady Gaga. The gist of the 7-day eating plan? Eat jarred baby food for breakfast and lunch, followed by a low-calorie dinner. Anderson cites this as a way to “eliminate toxins”—a red flag because the body naturally expels toxins. This is nothing more than a short-term crash diet that is very low in calories and nutrients.
Absolutely agree. I’m coming up to 64 years old and have managed to loose weight, gain lean muscle and strength by a combination of healthy eating and regular vigorous exercise. I prefer to do my gym sessions in a functional gym where I can combine HIIT training with some basic weight training and strength exercises such as prowler pushing, battle rope exercises or tyre flips. Over the past 6 months I’ve seen an amazing change in my body shape and I’m now maintaining a healthy weight and body mass index as I shed fat and gain lean muscle. The key to success is to enjoy a varied training schedule and not get stuck into repeating the same exercises every session.

If you’ve gained girth after 40, it may be a sign that your liver isn’t functioning optimally. Avoiding toxins will help it work more efficiently — and slim your middle. Cut down on sugar, artificial sweeteners and trans fatty acids. Re-evaluate your need for over-the-counter pain relievers and limit your alcohol consumption to just two servings (preferably of red wine) a couple of times a week.

how to get rid of belly fat women over 40

ex-Spice Girl, fashion designer and mother of four Victoria Beckham cites the alkaline diet as her method of maintaining her incredibly svelte figure. The diet tries to keep the body's pH level between 7.35 and 7.45 by ultimately aiming the dieter to eat 80% alkaline (fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes – fennel, broccoli, grapefruit and kale are considered the most alkaline) and 20% acidic (wheat and dairy products, coffee, sugar, meat, fish and alcohol) foods.
Blaming your belly fat or those extra five pounds on the fact that you're getting older? Well, now's the time to stop believing that weight gain is an inevitable part of aging. Yes, as we get older our hormone balance shifts in ways that encourage weight gain. For example, testosterone and DHEA levels decline in men, and women's insulin-regulating hormones become less effective. These changes can decrease muscle mass, slow down your metabolism (some reports say by about 2 percent per decade after age 30), and sap your energy while increasing belly fat and insulin resistance. But it’s not hopeless! The more we eat clean, live clean, and work out, the better our hormone balance will be — and the healthier our metabolisms will remain. Here are some tips for mastering weight loss and your metabolism beyond age 40. How to start a healthly lifesyle and lose weight after 40 I Get fit and healthy
“Women in their 40s come to know that, while socializing with friends is fun and rewarding, partying out late brings more burden than good,” Dr. Rosenfeld says. “They might choose to invite friends over for a quiet night in or spend their nights engaging in self care (reading, relaxing, taking a bath). Either way, they’ll get more sleep, won’t be hungover, and will face the next day energized and refreshed.”

It’s no surprise that Victoria Secret models follow some strict diets, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is no exception. She follows a plan by Dr. Nigma Talib, who practices naturopathy, which is a system of treatment that focuses on diets, herbs, vitamins, and natural agents to heal, rather than surgery and prescription drugs. Dr. Talib doesn’t let you have sugar, dairy, gluten, or alcohol.
If you eat healthy and exercise regularly and still can’t lose weight, your thyroid might not be working like it should. This happens in about 5% of people, and it's most common in women and people over 60. In addition to weight gain, it can also cause fatigue, joint or muscle pain, and depression. Medications can help, so get it checked if you think it might be an issue.

Instead of ditching carbs or going low-fat, try a diet that's rich in veggies, beans, and legumes to increase your metabolism — and keep your blood sugar from spiking. "Many people think weight is all about calories in, calories out, but quality also matters," says Aunna Pourang, M.D. "[In a 2012 study], low-carb diets showed the most increase in metabolism, but also showed an increase in the stress hormone cortisol. This is why scientists concluded that the low-glycemic diet worked the best."
This diet’s extreme and can only be done for a short period of time — but it certainly promotes weight loss. E! News reports to start, you must create a cocktail consisting of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup, and water — and that’s the bulk of what you’re consuming for 10 days. It was also promoted as having the ability to “detox” your system, though nutritionists have since debunked this.
