19. You’re eating too many ready meals – it’s so easy to get home from a busy day at work and pop a ready meal in the microwave. Trouble is, this won’t help you lose weight. Why? Because a/ processed foods are mostly made with vegetable oils that turn in to trans fats in the manufacturing process (trans fats encourage weight gain) and b/ the nutrient value is likely to be much lower than a meal cooked with food from scratch (see no. 12).

Cardio will help burn the most calories, and this can be anything from walking around the neighborhood to riding your bike to jogging on the treadmill. Whatever you choose for your cardio, keep it challenging by increasing duration, distance or intensity so that you continue to burn as many calories as you can. Writing down a plan can help keep you motivated and goal-oriented, and it can also help you track your progress.

If you're like many women over 40, you've probably noticed that it's become a lot easier to gain a few pounds than to lose them. The foods that you ate without care in your 20s and 30s now stick to your body like glue, adding bulk to your midsection. The good news: The solution to a slim, firm body at 40-plus is no farther than your fridge. Research shows that, when combined with a little regular exercise, what you eat and when you eat it are your metabolic secret weapons for building muscle mass, the body's prime calorie-burning tissue and a key driver of your metabolism.
Make a quarter of your plate whole grains or starchy vegetables such as squash, corn or sweet potatoes, and a quarter lean protein. Serve with two teaspoons of healthy fats, and stick to fruit for dessert. This ensures that you get an appropriate balance of protein, carbs, and fat from nutrient-rich, filling foods. And make sure you keep an eye out for the six subtle signs you’re eating too many carbs.

“Always be prepared for a busy or unpredictable day by keeping healthy snacks on you, at your desk, in your car,” says nutritionist Amy Shapiro. She suggests keeping almonds or other unsalted nuts, apples, bananas, chia bars, protein bars, or other fruit and nut bars close at hand. Shapiro says that if you have to skip breakfast, lunch, or even dinner during your quest to look your best, you can keep your energy levels up while making healthy choices. “You’ll have no reason to run to the vending machine for chips or stick your hand in the candy bowl,” she says. Although it’s true that egg whites are low in calories, fat-free, and contain most of the protein found in an egg, eating the entire egg is beneficial to your metabolism. The yolk contains many metabolism-stoking nutrients, including fat-soluble vitamins, essential fatty acids and—most significantly—choline, a powerful compound that attacks the gene mechanism that triggers your body to store fat around your liver. Worried about cholesterol? New studies have found that moderate consumption of two whole eggs per day has no negative effect on a person’s lipid (fat) profile and may actually improve it.
As a general rule of thumb, anything that seems too good to be true probably is. And the case remains for zero-calorie artificial sweeteners found in sugar-free drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Snapple. Yale University researchers found a link between the fake sugar and an increased risk of obesity and excess belly fat. “If drinks with artificial sweeteners are a staple of your diet, it’s best to kick the habit to maintain health and prevent diseases throughout the aging process,” says registered dietician Lisa Moskovitz.

“Menopause is right around the corner, which means muscle mass and bone density both start to decline,” Honaman says. Most women in their 40s are aware of this. “For me, that was a far stronger motivation to get to the gym and to adopt a more healthy lifestyle than the motivation of showing up at the pool in a bikini had been decades earlier. It’s about more than just vanity; the health stakes are higher now that ever before.” What's Making You So Hungry?
Weight loss doesn’t get easier than this: Simply drinking more water may increase the rate at which healthy people burn calories, according to a study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water (about 2 tall glasses), participants’ metabolic rates increased by 30 percent. The researchers estimate that increasing water intake by 1.5 liters a day (about 6 cups) would burn an extra 17,400 calories over the course of the year—a weight loss of approximately five pounds!
Hate cooking your meals? If you don’t mind totally forgoing processed foods, the raw diet may be for you. Healthline explains when you’re on a raw diet, all foods you’re consuming must be unrefined, unpasteurized, not heated above 104-118 degrees, and not treated with any chemicals or pesticides. Other preparation methods, like juicing, blending, dehydrating, and soaking, are favorable. And while most folks who use the raw diet are vegans, some do consume unprocessed dairy and raw eggs for protein.

Regret dumping that extra teaspoon of sugar into your overnight oats? Undoing the damage can be as simple as sprinkling some cinnamon in! They’ll keep the doctor away and your muffin tops at bay because apples are a low-calorie, nutrient dense source of fiber, which studies have proven to be integral to reducing visceral fat. That’s just one reason why apples are one of the Best Fruits for Fat Loss!

Gwyneth Paltrow famously turned to a macrobiotic diet in 1999, partly because of her dad’s illness (he died in 2002 from complications from oral cancer), but also because Leonardo DiCaprio planted the seed of “how dirty meat is” in her head years ago.  She doesn’t give her kids gluten, she avoids dairy, and pesticides are a no-no. Boosting metabolism is the holy grail of weight watchers everywhere, but how fast your body burns calories depends on several things. Some people inherit a speedy metabolism. Men tend to burn more calories than women, even while resting. And for most people, metabolism slows steadily after age 40. Although you can't control your age, gender, or genetics, there are other ways to improve your metabolism. Here are 10 of them.
So I resolve to be sane and good to myself and I formulate another plan: I will try and make exercise a priority. I will keep eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I will strive to eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. I will choose foods that make me feel the best, physically and mentally, and avoid the ones that don't (read: My Number One Trick For Eating Right). I will enjoy the foods that life has to offer, including but not limited to crusty, home baked bread and a scoop of mint chocolate chip on a hot day. I will occasionally overdo it, but won't beat myself up. I'll stop wishing for the metabolism of a 25-year-old and start feeling grateful for the rich, full life of a 43-year-old.
In their quests to get trim, many dieters think that refraining from a few olive oil drizzles will help cut calories and boost overall weight loss; meanwhile, it’s actually the complete opposite. The heart-healthy oil helps unlock the nutritional benefits of fat-soluble vitamins’ (vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are found in many veggies like salad greens). Olive oil is also linked to reducing weight circumference and preventing heart disease, giving you the green light to dress that spinach salad.
Well, I’m tired, and tired of looking in the mirror wondering where my bod went? When I hit 19, I went active military from 87′ to 95’… Army SFOD then USMC 4 yrs reserve. I ran 5 miles 5x wk, did 80 push ups, 69 sit ups, 25 pull ups, <<< all in the military's required 2 minutes, followed by cool-down stretching, etc. 6'1" & 172 lbs… Lean and Mean as we said. I never smoked either. So, five years after leaving the service and ending up with a job that was lucrative, it was very, very low from a physical standpoint. I gradually was down to 2.5 miles a day x5 a wk, then just walking at work and that was all my physical activity. No more push ups, sit ups, pull ups, nothing. My energy dropped off a cliff. Fast forward to 2005. I went from 5-6 glasses of red wine a week, to 3 beers a day x5 a wk, don't eat well, no energy and have a aweful beer belly (looks like I'm pregnant), my arms and legs are thin, and my 30" waist in 2002 is now 36" , I'm 210 lbs, my belly/midsection use to be 28" in 1998, now it's 55" measuring around belly area, blood pressure is up, etc…. Sadly, my newer friends from 2000 to current are similar in shape. They all say: your 48, getting a belly is a part of life, just live with it… You'll never get back in any kind of shape… Well that last remark lit the proverbial, motivational fire under my back side, but I still just don't have the drive. The discipline is there. I need to start out slowly so as to not hurt thy self. Tried push ups and could ONLY do one!!!! I'm 40 lbs heavier now too don't forget. Sit ups?….. one…. Running: one block…. Never had a 6 pack, as those are genetic, maybe a 2 or 3 pack. I need to help myself before it causes health issues I'll regret. Lastly, Doc says to start slowly. He was Air Force and he recommended the pre-basic training physical prep program to slowly get a good routine going again, but I need a "beer belly gone in 30 days" kind of drop first off. I've heard lemon juice, lemon rind and garlic in 50% water, 50% juice, might help along with broccoli, celery, asparagus and salmon jerky, and cut out the BEER, go back to a glass of red wine every other day. He said red wine and 70% or higher pure dark chocolate are good for lowering blood pressure too. Thanks.
According to a study in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, eating just two-and-a-half serving of whole grains—like pearled barley—can slash your risk of heart disease by more than 20 percent. So start your day off right with the tastiest early-morning grain: Oatmeal. For best (in other words: tastiest) results, cover it in berries and cinnamon, both of which have heart-boosting benefits.

getting rid of body fat after 50

Men and women who consumed a postexercise protein drink gained more metabolism-revving muscle mass and lost 50% more body fat than those who didn't refuel after working out, found a study published in Fitness Management. "For about 30 minutes after exercise, muscles are especially receptive to amino acids," says Wayne Westcott, PhD, the lead study author. "The combo we used—about 24 g of protein and 36 g of carbs—helps speed muscle repair and growth. As long as you eat close to 20 g of protein and 30 g of carbs, you'll get similar results." Enjoy this snack—or something similar—soon after exercise.
Having a salad for lunch or dinner fills you up with belly-flattening fiber and nutrients, and adding one more ingredient will really stoke your metabolism: salmon. You already learned the metabolism-boosting effects of protein, but with salmon in particular you'll also get a dose of omega-3 fatty acids. In a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, supplementing diets with fish oil for six weeks increased lean muscle and decreased fat. Other studies have shown similar effects. Scientists speculate this reaction may be due to fish oil's ability to reduce levels of fat-storage enzymes in the body.
Focusing on being healthy means getting about 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day. This level of exercise can keep your heart healthy and work on things like lowering your cholesterol and/or blood pressure. This is a great place to start if you're getting into exercise after a long break. There's no reason you can't start here and progress to more intense goals as you build strength and endurance.
While weight loss after 40 is absolutely possible, keeping your expectations about how fast you’ll shed those pounds in check can help you stay on track in the long run. Managing your expectations about your weight loss can help keep you from getting discouraged if you’re not slimming down as fast as you had hoped, making it easier to stick to your plan and recover from those little hiccups that could otherwise send you face-first into the next brownie sundae you see.

For Brenda (and many of my patients), this high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet helped reset her insulin, estrogen, and other hormones. She lost weight, felt better, dialed down her hot flashes, and on her third visit seemed thrilled that finally she was back in the mood again. Especially for menopausal patients, I’ve found these nine hacks help optimally transition into this effective diet:

To achieve a better macronutrient ratio, don’t worry about counting macros with fancy apps. All you need to do is break down your meals like this: center your meals around non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, peppers, zucchini, mushrooms and green beans. Fill at least half of your plate with these lower calorie, high-fiber foods to satisfy hunger and pack in the nutrition.

Non-exercise adaptive thermogenesis (NEAT) is the next part of your metabolism, and it's basically made up of those extra things your body does that aren’t really exercise, but that still cost energy (think: fidgeting, shivering, and all the things you do to go about your day, like walking and standing). It accounts for about 20 percent of your metabolism, and it can vary from day to day depending on things like what you’re doing to what you're eating.

Kourtney Kardashian is considered among the healthiest of the Kardashian bunch. According to a People story from February 2018, Kardashian shared in her app that going keto was a “really positive experience.” She said she first went keto after doctors found high levels of mercury in her blood. She now eats cauliflower rice or broccoli rice in place of carbs. But just because she’s a reality TV star doesn’t make her immune to the negative side effects associated with this way of eating. Kardashian admits she suffered from headaches and low energy for a couple of weeks and makes the diet more sustainable by giving herself a “treat yourself day” every week.
We know by now that juice “cleanses” aren’t the healthiest way to drop weight — but that hasn’t stopped certain celebrities from trying it themselves. The Sun explains this diet involves abstaining from solid food for a few days to a week in favor of consuming only juiced fruits and veggies. Unfortunately, many nutritionists find the diet to be high in sugar — and the body doesn’t need any help in “flushing out toxins,” either. How to Lose Belly Fat in 1 Night With This Diet

Fat may be higher in calories than carbohydrates or protein, but it satisfies your hunger—and that’s key to keeping your calorie count down. People tend to lose more weight and keep it off on a calorie-reduced diet that contains healthy fats rather than a diet that’s low in fat. That’s why the best diets for women include a source of healthy fat at each meal and snack. This could be two teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil, two tablespoons of raw nuts or seeds, or half an avocado. Check out the seven signs you’re not getting enough healthy fats. A striking new study published in the journal Diabetes suggests that simply turning on the AC may subtly transform a person’s stores of brown fat, the “good” fat stimulated by cold temperatures, that serves to keep us warm by burning through “bad” fat stores. Participants spent a few weeks sleeping in bedrooms with varying temperatures: a neutral 75 degrees, a cool 66 degrees, and a balmy 81 degrees. After four weeks of sleeping at 66 degrees, the men had almost doubled their volumes of brown fat. Cool! (In fact, your bedroom is an often-overlooked weight loss booster. Not that we should really argue with anyone whose nickname is "The Body," but the supermodel's method to looking so phenomenal at 51 is kind of a headscratcher for those not familiar. Relying on the ideology that an acidic body is more susceptible to disease that can throw metabolism and other things out of whack, Macpherson eats alkaline foods (including whole grains, leafy greens) and avoids things like coffee and alcohol in order to keep her inner pH balance in check. She even cops to taking pee tests in order to make sure things are in order. And she's not the only A-lister who does so: Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston are also fans—and considering that's pretty much the Good Body Brigade, we'd say they're onto something.

"Just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean they know what they are talking about in terms of diet and health," says Samantha Heller, MS, RD, senior clinical nutritionist and exercise physiologist at the New York University Medical Center in New York City. Even if stressful situations don’t cause you to binge on fatty foods, your body may take longer to process any calories that you do eat. In a 2014 study from Ohio State University, women who reported being stressed out over a 24-hour span burned, on average, 104 fewer calories after they ate a meal of eggs, sausage and biscuits. The researchers point out that over the course of a year, this deficit could translate to an 11-pound weight gain.

Robert Young, Ph.D., created the controversial alkaline diet. Health explains the diet claims certain diseases are caused by high acidity in the blood — so you should aim to consume foods that will balance your pH levels. Unfortunately, Young was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. And while the idea of balancing your acid levels through diet has been debunked by many nutritionists, his plan does promote the consumption of healthful foods.
That mom of three who also teaches spin class and always looks fanfreakintastic? Awesome. But that’s not attainable for everyone, which can leave you feeling frustrated that you can’t be a workout god or goddess, too. The good news: You only need 2 ½ minutes to boost your metabolism and start burning calories, too. Research printed in the journal Physiological Reports showed that people who did five 30-second bursts of max-effort cycling, followed by 4 minutes of rest, burned 200 extra calories that day and boosted their metabolism for the next 24-48 hours. It’s highly unlikely you have a stationary bike handy at your place of work, but a similar result could be achieved by running up the stairs and doing jumping jacks. Experts say weight training is the best way to crank up your resting metabolic rate. "As you get older, your resting metabolic rate drops, but weight training can rev it right back up again: A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories a pound of fat does," explains fitness expert Westcott. In fact, a woman who weighs 130 pounds and is muscular burns more calories than a sedentary 120-pound woman of the same height. Regular strength training can increase your resting metabolic rate anywhere from 6.8 to 7.8 percent. (That means that if you weigh 120 pounds, you could burn around 100 more calories a day, even when you're just watching TV.)

This is another "healthy" swap gone wrong. Sure, egg whites have less fat and fewer calories than whole eggs — but they also have fewer nutrients. Vitamin B-12 is one of those nutrients you’ll only find in the yolk; it’s essential for your brain health and keeps your blood flowing normally. Your body absorbs B-12 more poorly as you age, meaning that cutting one of your main sources of the nutrient is a bad idea. Egg yolks also have impressive stores of vitamin D, A, E, and K, along with lots of omega-3s. You’d be surprised how many people subsist off of egg whites but still take extra omega-3 pills.

Then look for healthy and unhealthy patterns, which can help you identify the specific life and emotional connections you have with food.

Have a few cups of java for a metabolism boost, but if you’re never seen without a mug at your lips, that could work against you, says nutritionist Amy Shapiro. Caffeine is a natural appetite suppressant. If you’re constantly consuming it, you may not eat much—or realize how hungry you really are—until you get home for dinner. “Not eating enough throughout the day can make your metabolism sluggish,” she says. “By the time you eat dinner, instead of immediately using that food for energy, your body is aggressively storing it as fat, just in case it will be deprived again.” 5 best abdominal exercises for beginners over 40 from home
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of the book. I have read it cover-to-cover. Several times I have been asked to choose as "favorite" essay. I cannot. I really can't. Eat one speaks to me in a slightly different way. Moving from one essay to the next was like eating a box of mixed chocolates: each was delicious but different from the last. Try one more. Read one more. Then it was over! I read every page--and didn't gain a pound ;) Yes. I recommend this book to anyone woman who dreads turning 40, 50, 60, 70, or 80. There's good news coming. Keep going
Ideally, we sleep about eight hours for every 24. Most people spend another seven to ten hours sitting at their desk. That means most of us spend the overwhelming majority of our time sedentary. Our bodies weren’t designed for this level of inactivity—most of humans’ evolutionary history involved being active, searching for food and fuel. Nutritionist Lisa Jubilee says that one way to burn more calories daily is to stand more and sit less. She cites a British study which found that standing at work burned 50 more calories per hour than sitting. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, consider this: If you stand for just three hours of your day, in one year you’d expend more than 30,000 extra calories—which amounts to about 8 lbs of fat!
The key to this metabolism diet trick is to start slowly. First, add non-exercise movement to your day. Walk more often, take the stairs instead of the elevator, carry your groceries home from the store or add a few easy exercise sessions to your routine. Use an activity tracker to increase your daily step count and increase your total calories burned per day.
After a hard day at work, it’s temping to zone out in front of the TV. But did you know lean people watch less? A recent analysis of studies found that for every two hours spent watching TV, the risk of developing diabetes or heart disease, and early death increased by 20, 15 and 13 percent, respectively. Scientists are still figuring out exactly why sitting is so detrimental to health, but one obvious and partial explanation is that the less we move, the less fuel we require; the surplus blood sugar floods the bloodstream and contributes to diabetes and other weight-related risks that crop up in the 40s and beyond.
The truth: As with any eating plan, if you can stick with the lifestyle changes it advises for a long time, it might be worth a shot. Experts also advise people transitioning to a vegan diet to replace meat and dairy with foods that have a similar nutritional profile, like tofu, beans, and dark, leafy greens to ward off nutrient deficiencies. Also, instead of Bey and Jay Z's plan, which costs about $600 for 22 days, you might want to simply try going vegan with a friend. How to Bulk After Age 35 to 40

Funny how as your waistline expands, your interest in tracking the numbers wanes. Don't let it. It's no longer advisable to guesstimate your weight by the way your favorite jeans fit (or don't fit). Headlines that scream, "Stop Being a Slave to Your Scale!" are missing the point: Post-40 weight gain sneaks up on you. If the plane symbolizes your body, then its instrument panel is your scale -- it provides you with important data. Back in January, Posh tweeted a picture of the cookbook Eating the Alkaline Way. "Love this healthy eating cook book!!" she enthused. Clearly, it loves her back; Beckham has maintained her signature svelte frame with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables that curtails consumption of acid-forming foods like dairy, pasta, meat and fish. The goal? To keep the body's pH balance between 7.35 and 7.45. Other famous fans of the diet book, penned by Natasha Corrett, the stepsister of Sienna Miller, include Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Justin Timberlake trains in the morning, and thus, he eats two daily breakfasts, according to Bon Appétit. “I’ll have waffles with flax seed and almond butter and one egg scrambled. Then I’ll work out and have a second breakfast–another egg or a protein shake. Within a half-hour to 40 minutes after a workout, that’s when you want to load up on protein. I mostly work out so I can eat religiously.”

The former Victoria's Secret Angel is hardly secretive about how she stays so fit, not that we're complaining. One of her top tips for beating bloat? A spoonful of unrefined coconut oil, consumed daily. Believe it or not, it's actually a practice many of our go-to nutrition experts swear by to get digestion moving and flush out the system first thing in the morning. (Try stirring a teaspoon into your coffee—it's amazing.)

This lower-calorie peanut product is often pitched as a diet-friendly replacement to regular, fatty peanut butter. It comes in a powder that you’re meant to mix with water. The result is a peanut butter imitation that’s nowhere near as oily and creamy as the original. However, a less fatty peanut butter is a less nutritious peanut butter — healthy fats are crucial for maintaining the quality of your skin, hair, and nails as you age. Instead of mixing pasty peanut butter powder, try one of these taste-tested full-fat peanut butters.

She may be the most beautiful woman in the world, but boy did she eat some crazy concoctions. Elizabeth Taylor turned to her own, let’s say, unique recipes to shed some pounds, like cottage cheese with sour cream over fruit, a peanut butter–smothered steak sandwich, and a “controlled pig-out,” where she once ate a whole pizza and hot-fudge sundae.

And while we’re talking work, check out these 21 Ways Your Job Is Making You Fat.
“It’s easy to kick back at the end of a long day and open up a bottle of wine,” says Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, founder of Real Nutrition NYC. “Before you know it, you’ve had two or three glasses each night!” Wine contains 120 calories per 5 oz pour, and it’s easy to overlook those calories. That means that after a few hefty pours you’ve consumed over 400 calories — and that doesn’t include dinner. “Cut back to one 5 oz pour a day, or scale back your drinking overall by 25% and you’ll see a few pounds come off,” she says. “Women in their 40s come to know that, while socializing with friends is fun and rewarding, partying out late brings more burden than good,” Dr. Rosenfeld says. “They might choose to invite friends over for a quiet night in or spend their nights engaging in self care (reading, relaxing, taking a bath). Either way, they’ll get more sleep, won’t be hungover, and will face the next day energized and refreshed.”

The cabbage soup diet? Really? Just no. Restricting calories and losing body fat too quickly can wreak havoc on insulin, leptin, ghrelin and other hormones, prompting a surge in hunger and a slump in metabolism. These effects can last for more than a year, even after the diet is abandoned, according to a 2011 study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Yo-yo diets also prompt decline in dopamine, which means you’re left feeling unmotivated and sluggish. Make sure you’re not also guilty of any of these 25 Things You Do That Slow Your Metabolism.

Spicy foods have natural chemicals that can kick your metabolism into a higher gear. Cooking foods with a tablespoon of chopped red or green chili pepper can boost your metabolic rate. The effect is probably temporary, but if you eat spicy foods often, the benefits may add up. For a quick boost, spice up pasta dishes, chili, and stews with red pepper flakes.

According to the American Heart Association, individuals who get merely 2 percent of their total calorie intake from yogurt reduce their risk of developing hypertension by 31 percent. That amount to one six-ounce cup every three days. For our money, spring for protein-rich Greek yogurt. You’ll experience higher energy levels and stronger muscle function.

Sound a bit extreme? That's because it is extreme. The Master Cleanse is really more of a fast than a diet. Most people, if they stick to the plan, will lose a bit of weight, largely due to the fact that they are taking in exponentially fewer calories on this diet than they would if they were eating normally. Also probably because mixing all of those things into the same glass is more than a little disgusting. What's more? Once a dieter who has done the Master Cleanse goes back to a normal eating pattern, he or she is likely going to gain the weight right back again.
“Many women find themselves sacrificing so much for their significant others, their children, their careers, and their volunteer service that by the time 40 hits, they haven’t done anything for themselves in years,” Honaman points out. “Retirement and empty-nesting will be here sooner than you think. Figure out who you are, and what you enjoy, so that you don’t wake up one day, look around, and wonder who that person is in the mirror.”

Kourtney’s not the only Kardashian who’s been a devotee to the low-carb lifestyle. Kim has jumped on the bandwagon, too, and, according to a story published in June 2016 in People, reportedly lost 60 pounds (lbs) after having her son, Saint, while on the Atkins 40 diet. Atkins 40 is a version of the Atkins diet designed for people with less than 40 lbs to lose, and has been around since the 1970s. Atkins is essentially the original keto diet and involves a very limited intake of carbs and high amounts of fat. The main difference is that on the Atkins diet you’ll slowly reintroduce carbs, so ketosis likely will only come into play during phase 1.

It’s well reported that fiery capsaicin (think: hot sauce, cayenne, chili) can rev up the metabolism, but study findings presented at the Experimental Biology meeting in Anaheim, California, showed similar weight loss potential in dihydrocapsiate (DCT), the non-spicy cousin of hot peppers. Participants who ate the most DCT experienced a metabolic boost that was nearly double the placebo group! Bottom line: Pile on the poblanos! The best ways to boost metabolism if you are over 40 years old

“As we approach 40, our metabolism begins to drop and muscle mass declines,” says Jim White, RD, ACSM, founder of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios. He suggests resistance training to help to increase a sluggish metabolism while building muscle mass. “Lift two times a week for maintenance and three times a week to see increases in strength gains,” he says.

Oh indeed, I can empathise with the weight gain over 60. I am now overweight for my height and need to lose 10 kilos. I have no reasons, only excuses, but at 70+ with two hip replacements and a troublesome knee, doing the 10000 steps is a bit of a struggle. I am vegetarian, (50years), always did exercise (modern dance and aerobics), but I love my food, without overdoing it. I guess it’s old age creeping on, but I shall still struggle to eat well and lose a bit of weight.
According to a review published in the journal Obesity, legumes—including beans, chickpeas, lentils and peas—could keep you from the snack drawer until dinner. Researchers found that subjects who consumed between ¾ and 1 cup of legumes daily felt as much as 31 percent fuller than those who didn’t! But there’s a catch: Although participants felt fuller when they ate legumes, they didn’t always eat less throughout the day. It’s still up to you to tune out the call of cravings—a completely different beast than hunger. But when it comes to willpower boosters, beans are a great way to get a jumpstart. They’re also one of the 30 Best Food for 6-Pack Abs. 7 Steps For Losing Weight After 50
Spreading your meals throughout the day might keep you from getting too hungry and overeating. If so, it is a good idea. Athletes perform better when they eat more often in smaller amounts. If you are someone who has a hard time stopping once you start eating, 3 meals a day may make it easier for you to stick to an appropriate intake than lots of little snacks.
We know, we know: It’s flu season. But we’re sorry to say that, after our research team here at Eat This, Not That! dug into the science, we have some bad news for you: Your hand sanitizer could be making you fat. Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial agent frequently added to soap. It’s referred to by researchers as an “obesogen”—a compound that can potentially cause weight gain by disrupting the body’s endocrine (hormone) system. Studies suggest that triclosan can negatively affect the thyroid. As thyroid hormones control metabolism, any hit to the organ’s functionally could cause you to gain weight. The evidence is of particular concern for hospital workers, researchers say, as they’re exposed to the antibacterial agent on a regular basis and often show significantly higher levels of triclosan in their urine. A study in the journal PLOS One found a detectable level was associated with a 0.9-point increase in body mass index (BMI). If you’re a frequent hand-washer, experts recommend sticking to good ol’ soap—not the antibacterial kind—and to buy organic cleansers when possible.

The truth: Like the Baby Food Diet, the reason the Cookie Diet could be linked with weight loss is because of calorie restriction — all of those cookies only add up to 540 calories, about the equivalent of a single meal. A look at the ingredients in Siegal's "cookies" (wheat bran, beef protein, egg whites) also suggest they're more of a high-protein, high-fiber snack than anything else.
You need to eat less. It doesn't matter if all you eat is grilled chicken, brown rice, and broccoli. If you don't cut back on your portions, you won't lose weight. Everyone's calorie needs are different, but in general, a woman eating 2,000 calories per day should aim to cut back by 400 to 500 calories, recommends Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, nutrition expert and author of Eating in Color. (These 5 simple ways to cut 500 calories can help.)
Although you shouldn’t go to bed starving (that presents its own sleepytime problems), you also shouldn’t hit the sack completely stuffed. When you eat a large meal before bed, your body works to digest it long into the night — and if your body is still worked up, so are you. The later you fall asleep, the less rest you’ll get, and you’ll wake up feeling groggy and more likely to reach for calorie-dense items. We know that you’re still cool, and you’d like to eat dinner at a more fashionable hour, but supping on the earlier side could be a huge boost to your weight-loss goals. In a study conducted by Swiss and German researchers, lucky participants ate about 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate daily for two weeks. Ultimately, these chocolate nibblers had lower stress-hormone levels and a more regulated metabolism than a control group. Scientists speculate that chemicals in cocoa, such as flavonoids, play a role in regulating metabolism by alleviating stress that can cause your fat-burning engines to go on the fritz. Should you think this is a license to go wild, take heed: We’re talking small amounts of high-quality dark chocolate. Researchers say 1.5 ounces is enough.

With her porcelain skin, perfect bone structure and timeless elegance, it is easy to see why. Catherine is 48 and has two children with husband, Michael Douglas. The Deal: The supermodel, cookbook author and Shake Shack/Doritos/Waffle House obsessive could never forgo carbs entirely, but she tries to limit them, when doable, and still eat as much delicious food as she possibly can. “I’ve always had to watch myself. My family is not naturally thin, and we put on weight quickly. I find low-carb works for me,” she told Women’s Health UK in 2015. And, judging by her Instagram, Teigen still eats a healthy amount of carbs.
Being over 40 doesn't automatically mean that you now have to cut out certain foods to get (or stay) slim—unless you know deep down that a food is truly getting in the way of your goals. If you really hate regular milk — or have some other aversion to eating dairy — by all means, drink almond milk. It’s a perfectly healthy staple to keep around the house and add to your smoothies, pour over cereal, or just drink plain. However, if you’re drinking it because you think it’s healthier, there’s no need. Firstly, it’s not the healthiest plant-based milk at the store. And secondly, cow’s milk has much more calcium than almond milk. After 40, you really need calcium. It’s essential for your body to perform muscle contraction, nerve and heart functioning, and other biochemical reactions. If you don’t get enough calcium from your diet, your body starts taking calcium from your bones — that’s no good if you want them to stay strong well into your golden years.

I am 51 years old and I’ve been following you for about four years. I have lost 25 pounds, and physically I look great. I eat mostly grass fed beef organic chicken and vegetables. I am gluten-free except I do drink some beers from time to time and eat some pub food about once a week. I do an intense free weight workout about 10 minutes four times a week. I am a UPS driver and move constantly for about 9 to 10 hours a day.
Getting enough protein is key to keeping your metabolism revved up and helping fill you up so you don’t deal with cravings as often. That means you can lose weight or maintain your weight without being constantly hungry. Protein-rich foods are among the top foods to eat to lose weight. For the best diet approach, make sure each meal and snack includes sources of protein such as chicken, fish, lean pork or beef, tofu, tempeh, beans, and lentils, or dairy products like milk, cottage cheese, and plain yogurt.
It helped me to focus on a reason for me to lose weight. I decided that when I retire I want to be in the best shape possible to start this new phase in my life. I lost 35 lbs. in my early 60’s and have kept it off for 2 years now. It was not easy but my reason kept me focused. I will be retiring in a couple of months and have more energy than I did when I weighed more. Good luck ladies, put yourself first. You can do this!
Capsacian, a molecule found in spicy chiles, has been shown to raise body temperature and speed up fat loss — although only temporarily, and only by a small percentage. Celi says there’s also some evidence that chemicals called isothiocyanates, which are present in pungent foods like spicy mustard, wasabi, and horseradish, may help activate brown fat and speed up metabolic rate. Bloody Mary, anyone? How To Lose Belly Fat | Is Menopause Really to Blame Over 50?
Hi Kathy - You are doing things right - I am a fan of bodyweight and dumbbells while doing HIIT and circuits, etc. You don't need to do the traditional free weight workout... BUT you do want to make sure you are challenging yourself enough to feel your muscles working - if you can go a little heavier, do it! Also - I don't know how much weight you have to lose - if it's only a few pounds - those are the hardest. However, if you have a lot of weight to lose and the scale isn't budging - you are doing a good amount of exercise - I would really analyze what you are eating - that is at least, if not more than 50 % of the equation. Pull-ups require a lot of control, and they’re highly effective for building muscle and strength in the upper body — something that diminishes as we age. Pull-ups simultaneously engage the back, shoulders and arms, and by building those three large muscle areas, you’ll help keep your metabolism stoked for years to come. “Another great thing about pull-ups is that they can be done in many different variations, which work different muscles,” says Jim White. Speaking of muscles, don’t miss these 30 Best Proteins for Your Penis!
According to holistic health coach Seth Santoro, a key element of your strategy for getting fighting fit at 40 is to increase cardio workouts, and to do them in a fasted state. “Hit the gym and do some treadmill sprints on an empty stomach to burn fat,” he says. “Your body is already in a calorie deficit, and it will ignite its fat-burning ability.” Glycogen levels are depleted during sleep, so your body will utilize a greater percentage of your body fat as an energy source.
Many women have trouble sleeping during menopause due to hot flashes, night sweats, stress and the other fun stuff that goes along with low estrogen levels.  Migraines anyone??  The bummer is poor sleep is linked to hunger and weight gain because of two more hormones:  ghrelin (the “feed me” hormone) and leptin (the “I’m full” hormone).  Here’s a short blog I wrote on that topic.  If you’re sleep deprived, these hormones get out of whack.
2. Exercise More. Contrary to what your body may want to do, you must exercise more regularly as you age, not less!  If you’re finding yourself slowing down, gradually start ramping it back up.  It’s not a good idea to go from taking an occasional walk to running a 10K.  That’s a fast track to getting an injury.  But start finding ways to fit more physical activity to your life.  The more you exercise, the more insulin sensitive you become (that’s the opposite of insulin resistant!)
